In all my moves over the years, I have lived and worked in some rather interesting locations. I have lived in a house that was literally right on the Oregon Trail (we could still see the ruts running from East to West). For many years I was stationed at a base that had the first Marine Recruit Depot on the West Coast, had my office in both the old Marine Brig and the infamous Naval Prison there, and ran a rifle range that dated back to World War I (Mare Island was also the first Navy Base on the west coast).

I have served at the site of WWII battles, Indian Wars era Cavalry Posts, and where the US built the first atomic bomb and conducted it's first rocket tests. However, where I am working now and will be working next week is unique in itself.

Now very little of San Francisco from before 1906 survives, the Great Fire took care of almost all of the town. But are still a lot of unique sites around, even if the original buildings are gone.

Where I work now is the former site of "Fort Gunnybags", the headquarters of the Committee of Vigilance in 1856. I knew of it even before I moved here, and it had a pretty grim reputation. Created to help end the corruption of San Francisco, several corrupt politicians were hanged here.

And it got the name because those in the committee built a wall of burlap sandbags to prevent it from being stormed (they even mounted cannons on the roof).

However, it burned down in the fire of 1906. Much like the place I am moving to next week. Across the street from the Transamerica Pyramid", it was the destination and headquarters of the Pony Express when it was in operation.

However, it also is gone, and I could not even find a photo or drawing of the original building.

I was hoping I could get some assistance from those with more IR experience than myself. I am struggling to find a specific topic to write on for a term paper. The assignment is as follows :

"Your paper must apply at least two competing theories to explain a country’s security policy during a specific instance. The paper should introduce the competing theories, apply the theories to the case, and assess which theory best explains the policy or outcome. Remember the goal of the paper is not a historical description of the event but to use different theoretical perspectives to explain why the event occurred, and conversely to use the event to evaluate the usefulness of the theoretical perspectives. "

We studied your basics in IR which includes realism, balance theory, constructivism and many liberal theories. While I understand the theories themselves I am struggling to find two competing ones that provide an analysis on a particular conflict in the international realm.

I'm not asking for someone to do the work for me, but can someone provide a suggestion on what theories would apply a particular case?

Thanks in advance.

As a Frenchman I was always under the impression that it was a less than savoury feat of the perfidious Albion. Upon reading Liberté, liberté chérie, by Pierre Mendes France, (which I started to read while waiting for my turn at the dentist office and highly recommend) it appears that the French fleet were in fact given fair terms, and that the death of many French sailors that day rests mainly on the shoulders of the French Generals who refused the British ultimatum in the hopes of a confrontation with Great Britain to spur Anglophobia in occupied France.
Your opinion is welcome.

he has a very interesting life story which began to draw my attention to the russian history during the period of tsardom .it seems lots of things have been fabricated and said about him .

l also remember anastasia'S story ,the daughter of tsar nicholas ..l will start another thread about her

Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin (Russian: Григорий Ефимович Распутин; IPA: [ɡrʲɪˈɡorʲɪj jɪˈfʲiməvʲɪtɕ rɐˈsputʲɪn]) (22 January [O.S. 10 January] 1869 – 29 or 30 December [O.S. 16 December] 1916) was a Russian mystic and advisor to the Romanovs, the Russian Imperial family. He was never officially connected to the Orthodox Church but considered a "strannik" (or pilgrim) wandering from cloister to cloister. He is even regarded as a starets (ста́рец, "elder", a title usually reserved for monk-confessors), believing him to be a psychic and faith healer.[1] He impressed many people with his knowledge and ability to explain the Bible in an uncomplicated way.

.................
The Tsar referred to Rasputin as "our friend" and a "holy man", a sign of the trust that the family had placed in him. Rasputin had a considerable personal and political influence on Alexandra,[14] and the Tsar and Tsarina considered him a man of God and a religious prophet. Alexandra came to believe that God spoke to her through Rasputin. Of course, this relationship can also be viewed in the context of the very strong, traditional, age-old bond between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Russian state leadership.

Rasputin's influence over the royal family was used against him and the Romanovs by politicians and journalists who wanted to weaken the integrity of the dynasty, force the Tsar to give up his absolute political power and separate the Russian Orthodox Church from the state.

Assassination
Rasputin fell, and the company left the palace for a while. Yusupov, who had left without a coat, decided to return to get one, and while at the palace, he went to check on the body. Suddenly, Rasputin opened his eyes and lunged at Yusupov. He grabbed Yusupov and attempted to strangle him. At that moment, however, the other conspirators arrived and fired at Rasputin. After being hit, he fell once more. As they neared his body, the party found that, remarkably, he was still alive, struggling to get up. They clubbed him into submission. Some accounts say that his killers also severed his penis (subsequently resulting in urban legends and claims that certain third parties were in possession of the organ).[30][31][32] After binding his body and wrapping him in a carpet, they threw him into the icy Neva River.

Subsequently, the Tsarina Alexandra buried Rasputin's body in the grounds of Tsarskoye Selo, but after the February Revolution, a group of workers from Saint Petersburg uncovered the remains, carried them into the nearby woods, and burned them. As the body was being burned, Rasputin appeared to sit up in the fire.
His apparent attempts to move and get up thoroughly horrified bystanders. The effect can probably be attributed to improper cremation;[citation needed] since the body was in inexperienced hands, the tendons were probably not cut before burning. Consequently, when the body was heated, the tendons shrank, forcing the legs to bend and the body to bend at the waist, resulting in its appearing to sit up. This final happenstance only further fueled the legends and mysteries surrounding Rasputin, which continue to live on long after his death. The official report of his autopsy disappeared during the Joseph Stalin era, as did several research assistants who had seen it.

The area has been dubbed the "Pompeii of the north" due to the perfect preservation of organic artefacts such as leather and wood.
One expert said: "This is the site that we have been dreaming of for 20 years."
Archaeologists expect the finds, at the three-acre site, to provide the earliest foundation date for Roman London, currently AD 47.
I was asked to write an essay on any president for my college American History class. I chose one of my favorite presidents -- Thomas Jefferson -- and centered it on the various contradictions that continue to mar his legacy to this day: Shocking Facts About Thomas Jefferson

I wanted to see what you guys think. Were you already aware of these facts before reading the article? Do you think anything should be changed/added?

I still have a couple of days before this is due.

Thanks.

Last week, there was a new tv miniseries (three episodes ŕ 1.5 hours) on German tv. I had been hyped a lot in papers and the media in general, as it was allegedly a new take on our German dealing with our past.

GERMAN television viewers are used to frequent programmes exploring the Nazi era and the second world war. But rarely has such a programme triggered as much debate and interest as the screening in mid-March of a three-part drama, “Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter” (Our Mothers, Our Fathers), which tracks the lives of five young German friends from 1941 to 1945.

The fictional drama, based on scrupulous research, had on average 7.6m viewers per night. Suddenly the few survivors of Germany’s wartime generation are being sought out as never before by talk shows and newspapers. Grandfathers and grandmothers, who for years kept silent, or were never asked, are facing questions about how it could happen, what it was like and whether they saw atrocities. Some more painful questions about who committed what atrocity are resurfacing, too.

Nearly 70 years after the end of the Third Reich, Germans feel compelled to keep their country’s Nazi history alive. “It’s not about guilt any more, but it is about collective responsibility,” says Arnd Bauerkämper, professor of history and cultural studies at the Free University in Berlin. The suspicion, however irrational, says Der Spiegel, a weekly, is that the German people are a special case, a historical outlier, who are unsure of themselves and must time and again seek reassurance. “It’s never over,” read a headline for an interview with Nico Hofmann, producer of the series, and a bunch of young Germans in Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, a daily.(...)

While I found the movies impressive and moving, I am not sure what's so especially new about it (except maybe the effects, which rather look like cinema than small screen): Especially the story of naive young men being consumed and traumatized by war, as the two brothers in the movies, has often been told before -- maybe the first time in the famous novel "Nothing New at the Western Front" from 1930 (and the movie based on it from 1931), or the German 1959 movie "The Bridge".

Maybe it's new that the five friends, the three young men and two young women, are portrayed in a very sympathetic manner; they speak and behave rather modern, so they appear very vivid and real for a young audience. That's the strength and weakness of the movie at the same time: The five main roles are maybe even too sympathetic, they aren't Nazis, just un-political people who do what they're told (who even have a Jewish friend among them and make fun of the government for banning swing music), yet none of them really questions the government. The two guys even enlist voluntarily and hope the war will soon be won -- maybe realistic, but the movie doesn't shed light on the question how this cognitive dissonance was possible (although it was probably reality for many Germans back then).

Maybe it's also a new approach for a German production that there is no finger-pointing on the generation of the perpetrators (and no apologies either -- their crimes are not hidden in the movies, on the contrary). In (West-) Germany, there first were two decades of silence after WW2, then three or four decades of self-righteous blaming against that entire generation. Now, we're finally asked to identify with them. Maybe a late invitation to understand grandpa better?

What do you think about that?
