There is a big ongoing discussion in Norway about letting the police wear hijab. As usual its the toothless labour party in Norway that want to accommodate the Muslims and letting the Muslims police people wear a hijab if they want..

1 thing about that just doesnt make sense, no matter how you look at it..

The police wears uniforms..

The point of a uniform is that everyone should look the same. Allowing hijab on police is alike allowing baseball caps for military personnel.. Its just stupid. Just simply an idiotic debate.
People dont think about this, they come up with tons of reasons in favor and oppose to in the heated debate, while forgetting that they are talking about the police, that wears a UNIFORM.

-- The police wears uniforms --

There is however the problem of under cover police operations or plain clothes police. However that is from the point of being able to move freely and inconspicuously among the population.

There is the added problem that Sikhs in the UK and in America are (I believe) allowed to wear turbans rather than police helmets or caps. We do come down to one religion being the problem here. Are there any Sikh police officers in Norway Maximus?

No, but they are considering allowing all kind of stuff including sikh head wear.. Its not just hijab but all type of religious headware.. Its ridiculous.. The police has uniforms, and they should be the same. As for private clothing, or undercover or whatever, thats something completely different. But religion and uniform do not belong together.

Standard Norwegian police uniform..

Thats how it should be.. Its the same for women and men. Wearing another head outfit is not logical, a uniform is a uniform and should be the same for everyone, thats the point of it.
Changing it makes no sense, it would be a horrible step for our society to take, police are suppose to be uniform and authoritative. I wouldn't respect a police officer wearing a hijab. It wouldnt feel like a police person to me.

That's my view - however I think if you allow one thing then you must allow others. If you ban one then you ban all symbols. Do they have freemasonry in the Norwegian police too?

What about Norwegian Policemen wearing freemason rings with Christian symbols on? Are they allowed?

PC madness.

Wear the uniform required or don't apply for the job. End of story.

Well, the police wears uniforms, but they are allowed to wear things like clocks and such(I think the only ring they can wear is a wedding ring), but they are restricted on "symbolic" things, but sure, they can wear a cross under their uniform, but they aren't allowed to show them. I dont know exactly the rules of such, I am sure the rules on such is much stricter in the military where nothing is allowed in that direction, except "hidden" symbols. When you wear a uniform, its suppose to be a uniform, everyone should look the same aside from their nature. Norway is a secular country in many ways.

Exactly.. The whole thing got started with a Muslim woman who asked the police chief to wear a hijab. Ridiculous. A uniform is a uniform and should always strictly like now remain such. If hijab is allowed then you are truly disbanding the uniform and allowing all kind of rings and symbols as well, that has no place in a uniform. Police are suppose to be professional, not show offs, they have a job to do, what they do in their personal life is up to them.

Agreed.
Keep the religion at home, jeez.

It's just a hijab, I don't see how that is going to affect her with the work her job entails.

And Maximus, don't be so over-dramatic about the uniform. People will still see the uniform and will still know that it's a police officer. They're not gonna be like "You know, she looks like a police officer should, but that thing on her head... Nah! There's no way she's a police officer".

I agree they should not to be allowed to wear anything that draws attention to them. The position of the police officer is to work in unity with other agents to do their job. The nature of their job could hold individuality as a detriment; could also work against safety.

If you religion conflicts with the requirements of your job, than find another field to work in. The police are certainly not making any effort to discriminate against anyone. The police uniform serves several practical purposes and wearing it is part of being a cop.

Exactly.... Changing the uniform to accommodate different views and religions is just ridiculous. It should never become a multiform, it should remain a uniform.

Come on, the point of the uniform is that everyone shall look the same, and reflect equal authority. The whole thing about changing the uniform code is just ridiculous, be it Sikhs headware of hijabs, baseball caps, or beer can helmets.

The uniform itself is a symbol. No point in adding symbols and making it confusing..

I don't see how a hijab makes a uniform confusing. You can see an officer because of there uniform, correct? How will a hijab stop you from recognizing that person as a police officer? Or say a Sikh's turban?

I'd understand if it was something being worn that impeded on that person to there job, but that is not the case here.

How about a baseball caps?

How about a baseball caps?

Sure, if it's a necessary thing in someone's life.

In fact, police officers in the US have been seen wearing baseball caps. The UK removed its helmets and put in baseball caps.

Thats ridiculous... You think thats ok? That they wear baseball caps on duty?

How is it ridiculous?

How will a baseball cap impede on an officer's ability to do his duty?

It isn't about ability to do his duty in a baseball cap. It is about officers of public safety being readily identifiable in crisis situations and the confidence that gives the public. Allowing all different kinds of uniform violations undermines the authority and image of public safety. we don't want people having to analyze the attire of a person to make a guess as to whether they are a cop or not.

How about no religious items on anyone whilst at work, have a compromise. Do a blanket ban.

I'm not certain he means when they are on patrol.
Many police in the US do indeed wear baseball type caps on duty. But the caps plainly say POLICE on the front.

I was going to joke about religious blankets but I think the best thing is a ban for everyone. Either everyone is allowed what they want or nobody is. That's the only fair thing to do.

Couldn't agree more.

For all the hysteria we American's can show towards immigrants, I am proud that we have never tried to due something as futile and outright racist as banning sombrero's. Of course, even that wouldn't be on the level of denying someone the ability to wear apparel on the job which they feel is necessary due to religious beliefs.

The more I read stories like this, and the level the Euro's feel that hijab-wearing muslims are taking over, the funnier it gets. Of course, all it'll probably mean is another minority shunned by the majority of 'pure' citizens will end up trying to immigrate to the promised land, aka America.
