This isn't the 30s anymore the Utopian ideal has been thoroughly discredited.
No relevant reply dear chap!

Human capital is a term that became popular from the Chicago school of economics. Referring to Marxist rhetoric is therefore really rather ropey! In fact it was total tosh

don't you see my point? my point is that in the post-modern world, the world we live in, the world commonly accepted by academia, your black and world of "choose between a Thatcherite Junta or East Germany" has been totally dismissed.

the kind of thought process that allows people to think of maximizing labor pools from a central position, or that people could even understand labor pools from a vantage as simplistic as class, is just totally irrelevant today. it's a dead idea.

class is one attribute among many, perhaps even the most important, however other identity factors are immensely important in any kind of social equation.

you essentially dismiss all liberal arts academic pursuits as "bourgeoisie" and sell humanity completely short of its non-material potential.

Are you puffing on a pipe? You made a ridiculous comment about human capital and Marxism. Just correct the error and stop using it as an excuse for typing random remark

LOL talk about avoiding the subject and refusing to back up your outrageous claims.

You are claiming that "Continentals" are bringing people down, so prove it. Or is it just a "personal" feeling based on right wing anti European propaganda through the last decade plus?

The general collapse of Continental academia.. again prove it. And in what way? Fewer students? Dumber students? Less professors and teachers? Buildings falling down? Less money spent? .. what is your proof that there is a general collapse of Continental academia?.. some very subjective world rankings?

Paul.
Im all for putting people in ability sets as well [and grammer schools] im just making the point that descrimination does come into play.

Why are you in favour of grammar schools?

A couple of myth-breaking points:

1. Selective systems are better for more able pupils
Not according to the DfEE 1998 Value Added study! Comparing non-selective and selective schools they find a greater % of "most able" pupils from selective schools score in the worst perfomance category. A much greater % (33% compared to 15%) of students from non-selective schools achieve the top 2 performance categories.

2. Grammar schools do better on average
Not according to performance leagues! Areas with mainly comprehensive schools had more "well performing" schools than areas characterised by selection.

Aint a damn thing gonna change the chances of to wealthy people having a child that grows up to be a bin man is just statistically very unlikely.

Education has its purpose in its own right but i would say the internet present a better chance of create wealth for a poor person than general education does. The more working class people go to university the less a degree will mean it pales in comparison to the connections and monetary advantages being born wealthy.

The best that can happen is a few squeeze through every generation.

it's impossible to debate this because you dismiss all the rankings you don't like

You seem to have this hang up about Grammar schools. What your problem is once again your judgement is severely clouded by your deep rooted socialists beliefs, however misguided they are. Grammar schools [state funded] in my city out perform the comprehensive [state funded] in all league tables. No matter how you look, being in a classroom where nearly every pupil has a common philosophy, [a hard work ethic] gives the child the opportunity to fulfill there academic potential, fact.

have a look at the following table, the "three" Grammar schools out perform all comprehensives within the city of Plymouth,

Devonport High School for Boys
Devonport High School for Girls
Plymouth High School for Girls

BBC NEWS | Education | League Tables | Secondary schools in Plymouth

Another interesting fact for you the last intake [at Plymouth High School for Girls] 27% of pupils were in receipt of free school meals, obviously low income families.
You will probably retort with, "I prefer to look at it this way or that way etc etc but results don't lie, its Black and White.

Paul.

Hang up? Nope! I just find sub-standard education systems difficult to stomach. I did note your failure to actually refer to my comment.
