Blast in Belarus Injures Dozens

Published: July 5, 2008

MOSCOW — A bomb exploded during an outdoor concert in the Belarus capital, Minsk, early Friday morning, wounding dozens, three critically, and a second device was found later in the same area, according to the authorities. “Very shortly we will determine whether this was a terrorist act of something else,” the interior minister Vladimir Naumov, told journalists on the scene.

Belarus is an autocratic country, saturated with police and security personnel, making widespread disorder rare. Shortly after presidential elections in 2006, the police and riot forces quashed what were for Belarus sizeable antigovernment protests. Such protests have not occurred since.

I've been to Belarus. No thanks.

There are Vaclav Havel style persons almost everywhere in Central and Eastern Europe. If we want to learn something from the past, then stopping them before they become too mighty, is a good lesson.

Belarus is doing well in this area.
