As is always the way of a Socialist Government, so intent on promoting all things to all people, they lose sight of one salient point, namely someone has to actually earn the money they seek to extract as Tax.
So now the EU has decided to make a point to 'Dear old Prudence Brown', your lot are spending far too much of what you don't have, your borrowing is out of control.
All that Prudence will and indeed does say is, 'We have things under control'.

A more interesting point would be the usefulness of EU budgetary guidelines and whether, given monetary union, a more active fiscal policy should be pursued. Here's a paper for background info
