Britain is not a poor country by anyone's standards. Of course the number of pensioners living below the poverty line has risen. When you have recession, inflation, and low interest rates then people who live on a fixed income are going to suffer. I'm willing to bet that it is not only Britain who has seen a rise in the number of pensioners living below the poverty line. Have you looked at numbers in other countries throughout Europe?

Any comparison of the Western world will show that Britain lags behind in the poverty stakes (particularly in terms of child poverty). Consider, for example, Table 2 in Smeeding's Poor people in rich nations

Don't bet! Present something in support. That table 2 demonstrates our dreadful record for elderly poverty after all. I know of no evidence to suggest the international comparisons have shifted

Yes it only costs us less than a $1 (44p) each per year to prop up the monarchy, a real source of poverty that is.

I think the elderly should not have to pay council tax, which is a rip off. Northern Ireland doesnt have to pay council tax .

But could you argue that the continued existence of monarchy is a crucial support of traditional class divides? It then indirectly promotes poverty via the support of income immobility?

How much did population increase, did the % of those under the poverty line change?

So you haven't got a poverty comparison to offer?

What proportion of our population is elderly? Compare that to continental European countries.
