Pupils 'to take allegiance oath'

BBC NEWS | Politics | Pupils 'to take allegiance oath'

Quote:
School-leavers are to be encouraged to swear an oath of allegiance to Queen and country under new proposals being unveiled on British citizenship.
Ex-attorney general Lord Goldsmith, who is calling for the ceremony in a report to Gordon Brown, says it would give teenagers a sense of belonging.

But Labour peer Baroness Kennedy says: "I think it's rather silly."

He is also proposing a new public holiday to celebrate "Britishness" along the lines of Australia Day.

John Dunford from the Association of School and College leaders said it was "a half-baked idea".
Hmmmm wtf??? What the hell is Lord Goldsmith playing at? This is grade A bull****!!

Well yeah it is quite unnerving. I verymuch doubt this stuff will get into Northern Ireland though, so I shouldn't be worried. It probably won't get through Parliament either.

It's kinda strange, since a percentage of the population is republican or anti-monarchy and wouldn't swear allegiance to the Queen anyway.

Re: Pupils 'to take allegiance oath'

Oaths of allegiance on this side of the pond don't work unless you join the armed forces or similar organisation. We have a very healthy cynicism to institutions and this idea goes completely against what is best about most Brits.
