If you have all the same laws on all issues, sounds like the only reason to visit is to look at the land, as the people are nothing but homogeneous uninteresting puke.
Can I get some Vidalia Onions with that Parmesan cheese?

Yeah, a wall and a border patrol will protect us. {sound of laughter} |

I love how the French are always masturbating themselves to how great their concern with public facillities are.
Wooo, good job Paris, you put up art and ****. Too bad it's after 1 and I need to go home.
Meanwhile utilitarian ugly old London metro is still running. |

Their metro is pretty good, using it at rush hour was easier than using the London metro then.

Never been to Brussels
(most of the stations date back from the 60's...it's a mix of plastic hippy decoration and frightening stations with dead-like statues of the royal family, plus out of service escalators) |

Decorations? What are those? |

Current Mood: | Re: Effects of the EU Expansion Copenhagen has a very new metro, thats connected to the larger train system. Now the planners have made the metro extremely well, as it crisscrosses the city at an angle to the larger train system. This means you can get from one end of the city to the other in under 30 min depending where you are. It also connects all the major areas, such as universities, downtown, airport, and the subburbs. It has cut down the travel time for example students considerably.. when I went to uni, it took me 30 to 40 min with buses, with the metro I could get to the uni in 15 min including walking.
Metros are the lifeblood of cities, and the better connected the system is to key areas the more will use it. But what is also important is connection from the metro to other forms of transportation.. like metro to the airport or to a train system that goes to areas where people live and so on. Hell metro stations near large parking structures on the outskirts of cities are also a great thing.

My (VIKING) ancestors on my father's side wandered into york and did a deal splitting the country into two about 600AD (I forget exactly when, and our family "historian" who told me all this when I was a kid is long dead).
After the establishment of the Danelaw there was quite a movement of people and goods between what is now yorkshire and the NE coast of the UK and the viking "homelands". So when a couple of hundred years later the call went out to go do pretty much the same to what is NOW northern france .... a couple of my later ancestors followed the call to arms....
Anyway, the wikipedia article does a pretty good job of explaining all the goings on in what is now France. The reality is that in order to have a quiet life, the french gave up a huge chunk of their land to us, and it was william of normandy and his norman (i.e. viking) chaps that invaded. And although I'm unlikely to be able to claim any of the inheritance, william handed out a large chunk of northamptonshire to my direct ancestor as a thank you for military services rendered....
Interestingly, Harold Godwinson's claim to the english throne was no better than the opposing claims by Harald Hardraade and William Duke of Normandy.
So apart from the fact that we fancied their women, the french role in the invasion of 1066 was on a par with their role resisting the german armies in 1939.
World War I of course was another matter. A set of treaties, counter treaties and an overlay of tangled agreements that meant had archduke franz ferdinand and his wife been killed anywhere EXCEPT sarajevo, and by almost anyone other than gavrilo princip, no-one would have given a monkey's nut. |
