A Syrian migrant who arrived in Germany two years ago has been arrested on suspicion of seeking funds from Islamic State to drive truck bombs into a crowd, a German state prosecutor's office said on Monday.

The arrest follows an attack two weeks ago.

In the latest case, the prosecutor in the western city of Saarbruecken said the 38-year-old Syrian was detained on Saturday and a formal arrest warrant was issued on Sunday on suspicion that he was trying to raise 180,000 euros ($189,000) to fund an attack.

These foiled terrorist attacks seem to hit the news daily. Germany must be 100% accurate at preventing these attacks, or innocent people die. Not an enviable position top be in, but plenty of people have warned of this for years. Apparently, no good deed goes unpunished.

What is interesting because it sounds counterintuitive at first is that the political elite is not totally unhappy that there are so many reports. They are using them to argue for more data collection, more video surveillance in public areas, stronger control of the internet, centralization of the police and definitely to argue transferring more power to the EU in security related areas and populsation control.

All that when a ban on muslim immigrstion would be so much simplier

I definitely agree that those you mentioned actually benefit from this chaos. They're overestimating their control over the people however, as we've seen political elites secure their own demise lately in the US, with similar beginnings taking place in Europe.
As the French monarchy learned, absolute power can be overturned by the people.

Especially considering that these things were all issues that were used by public media to demonize the actions of the US after 9/11.

Well, it depends on the situation and circumstances. The police profiled North Africans on New Years in Cologne, calling them NAFIs (approximately: North African Intensiv-Crime-Suspects) and controlling them by checking passports and arresting those without picture ID. They hardly checked Whites. This is remarkable, because it is police behavior that was thought intolerable only months ago but is now being demanded by large numbers of the population.

Would you be among that 'large number of the population' Jog? When it comes to airport security El Al has been successfully profiling for years; there is no reason why it cannot work in cities as well.

I am not at all adverse to profiling per se, though, having the police using derogatory names for larger goups that include a majority of non delinquent individuals, has a bad feel about it. It indicates something to watch. Sort of like a canary falls off its perch in a deep mine. But in general I think broad based camera surveillance and extensive data mining is fine. My argument has long been that a society's neglecting its use is highly negligent. I have had many disagreements with friends in political Germany on this.

But the real problem is that the checks and balances need to be strong enough to handle misuse. Those systems need planing and dare not be neglected or implemented in haste. The controls must be strong and institutionally independent. In Germany both have been shown not to be the case.

Also the rapid swing from horror stricken 'Nay!' to enthusiastic 'Yae!' is too reminiscent of the way democracies slip into serfdom, to accept with complacency

A month ago, a French court has declared unlawful for policemen to use skin color as a criteria when they choose who to control.

The decision was made after a couple of black and brown people attacked the government for discrimination before a justice court, because they deemed to be excessively controlled by the police.
