Since I am here on DB I recognize a phenomenon that takes places everywhere on the Internet.

Nobody listens to each other, everybody has his own "truth" and a lot of "evidence" for that truth from Internet platforms.

left - right , pro USA politics - against , pro EU politics - against. Either you are my friend or you are my enemy. Black and white. No grey.

Here is an interesting aricle about the possible reasons in hour times:

Of course Facebook and Twitter's bubbles are a terrible thing. But there is more than this.

The west has cultivated for decades, under the influence of Marcuse and others, a social repression atmosphere that commanded leftists to ostracize rightists. Therefore leftists typically think they have a holy duty to combat inappropriate ideas (the Social Justice Warrior syndrome), and rightists are fed up of being ostracized and of not being allowed to say what they think because of what looks like ideological fanaticism. Is it surprising that this repression poisoned the political debate?

The Yale problem begins in high school

The other reason is that Internet posters are younger than the rest of the population, and young people have faced less diverse political opinions and are therefore more easily shocked, and did not yet experience a change of their opinions. Moreover Marcuse's propaganda first targets the youth, who are the most indoctrinated by this social justice dogma. In Europe especially we educate our youth into thinking that they must prevent the resurgence of Nazism. Unsurprisingly, they then see Nazis everywhere since combating them and siding with Muslims instantaneously turns any poster into a glorious hero.

And guess who is mostly informed through Facebook? Yep, the youth. Not that TV and press are much better.

Finally, this polarization also has likely to see with the greater social and racial self-segregation, and generationism. Before that people were more equal, typically living in little to middle cities where the social mix was more diverse, with less inequalities among employees when the happy few were very few and there were many in the middle.

I personally think that this whole "lefty - righty" thing is panem et circensis. If people have someone to blame, they don´t think about changig a bit of the system at all.
In some cases I´m "left" , in some "right" - depends on the problem to be solved. And that´s how it should be in my opinion.

Within a single debate you are correct that each side will avoid being seen to change their mind but the point of these debates is not to get the other guy to change but to influence the spectators.

I use these platforms to harp on about the use of food as fuel (biofuel) causing (my guess) at least 20 million unnecessary deaths per year amongst the world's poorest billion people. It has raised food prices by 30% to 70%. All to make rich western farmers slightly richer. I hope some of my rantings have reached some people.

I´m a farmer myself, only as second job because I could not live from my farm. I agree with you, but not not the farmers get rich - you wount work for their earnings / hour - the companies get rich wich control the agricultural market.

Your abilirty to compete in the market with the large corperate types would be a lot better if the prices were lower. You could produce selected products which whilst not making loads of money would not be do-able for the big boys.

The subsidising of agriculture is simply evil.

Think of arguing as gravity influencing the path of a celestial body.
This body is made up of the knowledge, perception, automatic reactions, and feelings of the individual you are arguing with, and the greater the accumulated sum of them is, the more massive the celestial body becomes, and the more it will take to deflect it. Most commonly deflection can only be done gradually, and it often happens in such tiny increments that you don't even notice it.

Also note that at any time, there will be multiple sources of gravity affecting it, all trying to make it go their way, so yours must be better than theirs.

What you complain about is "natural" in a blog. Not nice, as would happen were individuals discussing matters across a table in person. The anonymity of discourse allows an individual to be more aggressive than they would otherwise be.

Only careful scrutiny of the text by a moderator can change that behaviour, and the moderators here simply don't have either the inkling or the time for that level of perusal of messaged-texts. I know it would bore the pee-outta-me.

Moreover, in debate one is supposed to provide "sources" when quoting information that comes from somewhere other than personal knowledge. But, that is very rare in this forum.

As a Centrist, I see a lot of partisan hackery. Lefties have their bubble, Righties have their bubble. Truth is relative anyway. So, when you have one of these biases, your own truth will of course be either left or right leaning.

There's the old saying of needing to be admiring of those searching the truth and needing to be leery of those claiming to have found it.

There are people here who are persuaded by reason and good arguments. Even more common than that are people who at least acknowledge the flaw in their argument and will take the time to form a better one.

I try to avoid engaging the partisans and ideologues in serious debate because they are a lost cause until they are willing to examine their own beliefs.
