"The Ukip rulebook explicitly rules out granting membership to anyone who has been in the British National Party, the National Front, the UK First party, the English Defence League, the British Freedom Party, British People’s Party and the Britain First Party. Mr Farage repeatedly cited the ban to counter accusations that his party harboured people with extremist views. ‘Let in penitent sinners’ But Mr Kassam said in a live Facebook chat: “I believe this rule needs to be implemented on a case-by-case basis, to look at whether these people meant harm, meant ill will, whether they actually bought into a lot of the hatred that [former BNP leader] Nick Griffin spewed. “If they didn’t, if these people were just people who made a mistake or these people were just looking for an outlet and they want to join Ukip, I don’t see why they can’t have an interview with somebody and say ‘I don’t abide by these things anymore, I am a penitent sinner’ or whatever it is."

I think there are several MPs who started out on one side of the political divide (at extreme edges) and ended up in the middle or on the opposite side.
