Latest costs protests in Europe hits Belgium

Belgians stage big protest rally
Thousands of trade union members have protested in Brussels against rising prices and the failure of Belgium's politicians to form a new government.

Belgium has been without a government since elections in June, as Dutch- and French-speaking political parties remain split over autonomy plans. The trade unions say economic and social policy had been neglected because of the political paralysis.

They were also protesting against high food and fuel prices.

'Fed up'

At least 18,000 people had taken part in the protest march in Belgium's capital, police said.

Most of italy is also grid-locked with protests at costs especially oil. A sign of change in Europe?

Europeans protest far more than Americans, that is a fact.

This is acutally normal, especially when something "pisses people off". Truck drivers, and farmers are the 2 groups who protest the most. And 18.000 people aint that many if you look at other protests. Plus the Belgium protests have also alot to do with the lack of a goverment for a very long time now.

Fuel prices have gone up, and those protesting are mostly truck drivers and others very dependant on fuel prices. Its not the first time they are protesting, and it will not be the last time. They want the goverments to cut the fuel duty and that aint gonna happen at this point in time.

Funny part is that fuel prices have not gone up by nearly as much as it has in the US, because of the falling dollar

The odd part is that the truck drivers dont like everyone else, pass the higher costs onto the next level in the food chain. Guess they need an economics 101 lesson.

Probally the usual US negative BS. Seems most Americans think Europe is one big cestpool of discontent and muslim extremists and that the only paradise on the planet is the US.

Yes but he talks about a demonstration against our political crisis and against the increasing price of oil. In which way is that a "sign of change"? We do that every week!

He also mentioned protests in Italy, hence I think he was making a general comment about "mass protests in Europe" and that some how was "sign of change". Not that he mentioned anything of change from too, or why a change is needed.

Re: Latest costs protests in Europe hits Belgium

Well in the case of Italy (or even France last week) those were really mass protest, which have paralized these countries several days.

The protest of saturday has lasted a few hours and was confined in one small part of Brussels. Only several trains have been delayed. Not really "mass protest"!

Hey for an American I bet that anything over a few hundred people is a rampaging mass protest

Except I'm not American and not based in America......................

We had a fuel protest this weekend by the same group that brought the UK to standstill in 2000.

I am highly amused at the guessing games at why I posted the thread and the assumptions for what I meant.

Ah well.

Yes an American would probably not have posted something from the BBC. But could you explain what you mean? I seriously don't get the "sign of change".
