In the second half of last year, more than 3000 refugees entered Germany per day. Around one million has come to Germany.

Now, that number is down to less than 100 per day.

That's mostly because Austria gave Merkel the finger and closed the borders, causing a chain reaction, so that all the other Balkan countries closed their borders for refugees, too.

The second nail on the coffin of the "Balkan route" (the route 90%+ of all refugees used to enter Germany) was Merkel's EU deal with Turkey. Turkey has agreed to take back many refugees, and Greece will turn back all who arrive at Greek coasts by default now.

So, is the situation solved, or what?

Now things get exciting. Europe gets to have it's own illegal immigrant crisis. These Europeans who keep thumbing their noses at THE U.S. gets to deal with a similar situation firsthand, and I bet all those bleeding heart excuses that they've been lobbing from across the pond come to an end as the reality sets in about the gravity of such a situation.

Oh, I certainly didn't "thumb my nose" at the US because of immigration.

But then, I don't really see how the situation is comparable. A main problem in Europe is that most refugees coming are Muslims; but next to no Muslims come to the US. Another problem is that less educated immigrants burden the European welfare systems; again, America doesn't have this problem, because America has no welfare systems worth talking about.

No, no, no, it's different with them.

See how this exposes European ignorance to the U.S. illegal immigration problem?

I got news for you...the US has a huge problem with illegal immigrants gaming the system and taking welfare benefits. It's not as if we have Rhodes Scholars and Cambridge Graduates crossing our borders illegally. Mexico was providing guidebooks on how to illegally enter this country, and I can assure you those guides weren't given out to Mexican doctors, scientists, and engineers. They were given to the unskilled and uneducated.

Wow, there seem to be some really sensitive Americans here.

You guys must be really hurt by all these stupid things some stupid Europeans say. And you're so hurt by that you even go to the Europe section of this forum to vent your anger at any random European who comes your way.

Poor guys, here's a hug for you. :)

i can see Germany is having its problems now because of this, but this kind of thing has been going on in america for awhile now, i live in the southwest along the Mexico border, and at times you could not go to downtown without seeing illegals everywhere standing on every street corner.

all of them are not bad, don't get me wrong, many of them are just looking for a better life and i understand that, however with them comes crime, gangs, shootings, traffic problems, burdening our social system.

we are supposed to be a nation of laws, yet we have government officials who don't want to enforce the law, and citizens who don't want it enforced either.

we have people who want taxes raised to pay for their cost and they want to open our borders.

we have many people seeking to become american citizens thru legal channels, they have to pay and wait to become one, yet we have people who want to give illegals the special privilege of coming in ahead of those who have followed the law.

And how did you come to think that these migrants swamping Europe have any qualifications at all?
They have for the most part no skill, and no knowledge of German, making them absolutely useless for German blue chips!
And among these migrants, you need to distinguish between the syrians and all the other muslims taking advantage of the mess resulting from the botched handling of the situation, essentially coming from north Africa who pass themselves off as Syrians, but in fact were sent by their families to Europe with the goal to earn as much money as possible by every means necessary and send it back home on short notice! And there you have the rapists (cf Köln), the drug dealers (cf Moleneebek in Belgium, hub for drug smuggling across Europe, and incidentally hideout for terrorists) etc.
I guess we will see as time goes by what will come out of this situation! But right now it is scary, because we have this enduring feeling that our institutions are literally overpowered by this sudden massive influx of migrants! And some of them are very aggressive, you know the kind of aggressivity you would expect when the goal is to defend your own country, not when you arrive in a foreign country, kind enough to welcome you but where you behave as if everything was due to you!

Don't forget Drugs!!

Oh really? I think you may be mistaken about that welfare stuff..

yes, and i can name another, drug dealers station men on top on of some of the high hills we have in southern az, they scout looking for border patrol, and warn the drug dealers of them

some places in southern AZ the federal government has put up signs warning citizens not to enter those areas because they are dangerous.

illegals have broken in houses, killed people.

Oh, I'm perfectly on your side ... I'm all for controlled legal immigration, but it's simply not feasible to open the borders and allow all people in who want to come in.

If a wealthy country did that, it soon wouldn't be wealthy anymore, and neither side would take an advantage, neither the people who come to that country nor the people who live there already.

I don't know the situation in America, but I feel what Germany's lacking is a solid legal immigration law, including a legal path to citizenship. It would be beneficial for all sides if Germany accepted a certain number of well skilled people into the country, and/or people with good prospects of acquiring skills needed on the job market here.

i loved Germany when i lived there, i hope its culture will not change to much from all of this

I doubt general culture will change much... one million refugees on a total population of 80 million isn't *that* much after all.

And then, most of them are seeking asylum, which means in case peace will be restored to their home countries, they'll have to leave again. Sure, it doesn't look so rosy in Syria and Iraq, ISIS is still strong, but you never know.

German political culture has changed already, though. I don't remember another issue in my lifetime over which the people was so divided, politically. Not even Schröder's reform of the unemployment support 2003/04 divided the people so badly. And we see the rise of a right-wing populist protest party ... never had such a thing either, after 1949.

But I'm hopeful that if/when things slowly normalize, as less refugees are coming, people will calm down again, too.

americans shave been divided since the Vietnam War

What's the main problem with illegal immigrants in America? What do they do?

They take all of the back breaking physical labor jobs that pay next to nothing that Americans won't do, then do their best to shield themselves and their families from being blamed for every problem in America.

We should remember that this time of the year in 2015, hardly anyone was applying for asylum. Currently it is just too cold, it is 10-15 degrees and rainy in Macedonia and only 5-10 degrees in Sarajevo. Walking long distances in this weather is not a very good idea.

Its easy to control the border when there is 10K refugees, and most are not even trying to cross the border. When the summer comes, it will be 100K+ of refugees and they are all trying to cross the border. That won't be very easy, and I don't think EU is up to the task.

If EU actually implement the deal, it will have to be implemented by brute force, because no one will voluntary head back to Turkey. I can imagine the pictures in the media, and how eventually they give up and ship them to the greek mainland. So my question is rather, if the deal with Turkey totally fail, which I predict it will; Will EU still give Turkey visa free travel?

You mean like construction and gardening? Both jobs that have downward pressure on American wages because they work for substandard salaries with contractors?

The situation is hardly solved but they've shown smarts by going to Canada for advice. A very intresting and fair documentary. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVWAIKoatWM

Well, hoping for the best, fingers crossed.

They'd have to pay the EU for the privilege of taking the asylum flood back before a single visa should be considered!
