School staff called police when a pupil looked at a UKIP website and an English Defence League video in class.Mick Taylor said his 15-year-old son was asked by police whether he was a UKIP activist, and has described police action as inappropriate.
Link.

:lamoAlmost posted this in "News of the Weird" but felt this was relevant to the current Prevent strategy which muslims say targets them unfairly.

If true, it would be interesting to know if it's legal.

Re: Anti-terrorism police called after schoolboy surfs EDL and UKIP websites at schoo

I didn't know what UKIP stood for, so I looked it up and found:

The UK Independence Party (UKIP /ˈjuːkɪp/) is a Eurosceptic and right-wing populist political party in the United Kingdom. Headquartered in Newton Abbot, Devon, its leader is Nigel Farage.

and then, Eurosceptic??

Euroscepticism, i.e. the opposition to policies of supranational EU institutions and/or opposition to Britain's membership of the European Union, has been a significant element in the politics of the United Kingdom (UK).
and then, Eurosceptic??

So, he looked at a website of a right wing group that wants the UK out of the European union. and the police were called, why again? Yes, this does look like it belongs in News of the Weird.

It's a lot more complex than that - many "KIPPERS" (supporters have their own name) are quite extreme in their views and opposition to anything to do with immigrants. Some would say the same applies to their leader Nigel Farage but I don't think so - although he could do more to rid the party of the extremes.

- So, he looked at a website of a right wing group that wants the UK out of the European union. and the police were called, why again? Yes, this does look like it belongs in News of the Weird.

UKIP were seen in similar light to the EDL which the boy also looked at during lesson times though their members did get involved in punch-ups with their opponents. Their leader (and founder of the group) left in protest at how they had become a racist, extremist group. The kid was probably referred for watching an EDL video than a UKIP video.

[/sigh] no, they're not. UKIP represents one strand of anti-EU feeling; many on Britains' left have also historically been anti-EU. The earlier EDL (as opposed to the remnant after Tommy Robinson left) may have been happy to be involved in punchups but were not a neo nazi group.

I wouldn't defend or sit on the fence at the EDL now though - but they are probably infiltrated by Special Branch and undercover MI5 people anyway.

well obviously they have some differences otherwise they would all just be one group, but maybe you could tell me a major issue that they strongly disagree on, like economic or foreign policy, something specific

Things like White Supremacy, Neo-Nazism and Fascism are incompatible with Conservatism. Please do not tell me you are going to use the American brand of Conservatism as an attempt to discredit this statement.

yes but there seems to be some disagreement on small issues like whether Romanians are technically human beings, or not. but in general they all oppose immigration

I suspect there's more to this than the father is letting on. He's banging on about UKIP and the EDL, and being "made to feel like a terrorist", and how ridiculous nanny state, blah, blah.. A school statement seemed to suggest the teen surfed more than just those two... maybe some more extreme righty sites.

It's spelled humour in English.

It's not.
And that further discredits your claim that these parties are all Neo-Nazi.

It wouldnt surprise me if it was. Snowden said the surveillance apparatus in the UK is far far worse than what the NSA does in the US. It's practically Orwell's Airstrip One in all but name now.

It's was a kid on a school computer. Of course they're monitored. I would expect nothing else, for obvious reasons.
