Top German Journalist Admits Live On air - National News Agenda Set By Government

Re: Top German Journalist Admits Live On air - National News Agenda Set By Governmen

First off.. Breibart.. seriously? Not exactly the best source on the planet and a little digging proves it..

Secondly... Wolfgang Herles was NEVER EVER the head of ZDF. The heads of ZDF have been Karl Holzamer, Kar-Gunther von Hase, Dieter Stolte, Markus Schachter and now Tomas Bellut... this is factual. Strike one two and three against Breibart..

What Wolfgang Herles has been in ZDF is the following.

1984 he joined ZDF to be Deputy Chief Editorial Director domestic policy. From 1987 to 1991 he was head of the Bonn Studio. From 2000 to 2015 he was editorial director and presenter for ZDFs cultural programs... you know, book programs and such... nothing to do with news or anything remotely that.

Now the kicker here is his history.. in the 1980s and 1990s he was highly critical of Helmut Kohl... a CDUer and Chancellor and critical on air many times. The CDU part of the ZDF board tried to get him fired or/and not renew his contract many times because of it. They failed.

Now what party is dear Merkel head off?.. Oh yea CDU.

Hence this guys bias is not only well known and he has a massive grudge against the CDU party and its leadership which is now Merkel.

No free speech or debates?

Strange how Herles (when pressed) said the exact opposite in an interview immediately afterwards.

He has incidentally not been "top" (as in holding a leading position in the TV-media that he originally criticizes) since 1991.

There are limits to free speech in every country, including the US.. The US censored and manipulated its media big time during various wars.... boobs, swearing and so on are BEEPed and covered up constantly.. so censorship is ripe in the US as well.

Now in Germany there is a dark history.. and the far right is nazi inspired, and since the of WW2 thanks to the allies, German society has hit down hard on hate speech by the far right Nazi inspired groups.

Well, with the obvious distrust abounding towards more mainstream media, I really can't blame you for not relying on any of them.

But a blog?

Goodness gracious.

Hmmmm......there are many blogs by good journalists that I would put above most national medias.

Fair enough.

What remains though is that Herles went into a stammering fit when pressed by another journalist (Jakob Augstein) who can be the least accused of curtsying to any (real or perceived) government demands.

Herles has an axe to grind, both with the CDU and with his former employer (ZDF).

As to the LI article, it's factually correct in listing but not in representation. No fault of its own, it's the usual misunderstanding that occurs when the American concept of "freedom of speech" is superimposed in everyone of its aspects onto countries whose totally different history has led them to different "handlings".

Arguing that is going to be as fruitful as shoving European gun laws down American throats or American gun laws down European throats.

Hey I agree with you for the most part. I'm just pissed that governments think that they have a right to suppress free speech, while at the same time shoving a self made crisis on to the laps of it's citizens.

If that were the case in Germany I'd be just as peed-off.

What the LI piece refers to though (and actually explains to some extent, certainly better than most blogs tend to) is that some examples of speech are not that free. Inciting hatred and subsequent acts happening to be one of them.

There are enough examples of "radicalizations" via the internet and they're not all confined to the jihadist movement.

In view of an already sufficient number of refugee shelters having been attacked (and torched), calls for precisely such conduct on any social networks are pursued. So best not to conflate the issue of laps getting whatever thrown into them and the pursuit of incitement of hatred.

Not relevant to this particular issue but, just for the hell of it, in Spain (I live there) the "state" TV is totally under the thumb of the gubmint (ANY gubmint that happens to hold the stick) and that's something I'm really disgusted at. Because it's not just about having a gubmint friendly agenda dictated to it, they've been forced to downright lie in the past.

Worst example being how the Madrid train bombings were still being blamed on the Basque ETA gang when everyone in Spain was getting it on foreign stations that the authorities were long since pursuing an AQ franchise thug group.

When that sort of thing happens in Germany, that's the time for Germans to get incensed.
