Germany: 1st Suspect Held Over Cologne Sex Assaults

BERLIN — Authorities in Germany have arrested a 26-year-old Algerian man on suspicion of committing a sexual assault in Cologne during New Year's celebrations.

Cologne prosecutors said Monday the unidentified asylum-seeker was arrested at a refugee home in the nearby town of Kerpen over the weekend.

The man is the first person to be held on sexual offense related charges, after a string of assaults in Cologne that sparked a debate about integration in Germany.

Prosecutor's office spokesman Ulrich Bremer told The Associated Press that 497 women have come forward alleging sexual assault, including three rapes, during New Year's.

The suspect in custody is accused of groping a woman and robbing her cellphone.

A total of 21 people have been charged with non-sexual offenses.

237 of cases reported to police being of purely sexual nature (harassment, groping and worse). In 107 cases of these 237, theft being an additional aspect and 279 reports pertaining to "bodily harm" alone (non sexual) and theft, also alone.

Total reported 516.

Cologne prosecutor's office, 6 days ago, meanwhile updated to a total of 561.

If it weren't for women's rights groups, this story wouldn't have made it to the light of day. The whole thing started on social media before it got picked up by the press.

I'm dubious about this arrest. He might be one of the people but all the reports from the victims and women's rights groups identified the perps as German-speaking north Africans.

Every year this kind of crap happens in Germany, especially around Oktoberfest. It's just that NYE 2016 was the first time it seemed organized.

Oktoberfest reportedly had only 30 sexual assaults last year, an event over 17 days and attended by millions, many of which under influence of booze. Cologne had around 200 sexual assaults in a few hours in an event attended by thousands. Although the media publicity admittedly did increase the reporting level in Cologne.
