70,000 guns in Austria have been sold this year bringing the total amount of guns in Austria up to 900,000. All shotguns are reportedly sold out as Austrians especially women flock to buy weapons to defend themselves.

A dealer said

'Virtually all shotguns are currently sold out, because you need no permit for them', said Thomas Ortner, spokesman for an arms dealer in Upper Austria

I must say the Austrians know what is coming.

FEAR! FEEEEEAAAARRR!

A wise man once said, the only thing we have to fear, is fear itself. And don't give me the line that someone with a firearm isn't afraid...because if he or she wasn't afraid at least to some extent, he or she wouldn't have bought the firearm to begin with.

That said, I don't want to stop good, law-abiding people from being able to buy firearms for self-protection...but to do so without regulation is tragically silly.

If I pay attention to the actual numbers, I'm much more likely to be shot by someone I know, or by an ex-con who purchased an unregistered firearm, than I am to be stabbed by a jihadi.

But please, don't let anything like facts keep you from living in fear, now.

There is a chance, a growing chance. It is a legitimate concern.

Will some bad people be coming with them? Sure, just as there are always some bad people among the immigrants who come to any nation. The only way to stop any bad people from coming with the immigrants is to stop ALL the immigrants, and that's simply not going to happen.

To be sure, that doesn't mean that we should open wide the floodgates and let everyone in, but neither does that mean that we (or the Austrians) should live in fear because we associate the great many with the very few.

If they are coming from countries with little respect for women and with religious hatred and intolerance running high there is a good chance a sizable minority will commit crimes.

Remains to be seen what happens. After all a shotgun can also be used for decoration.

Your silly platitudes certainly reveal an utter lack of knowledge on the subject.

Countries like Sweden which were once among the lowest in the world in regards to rape are now among the highest due to Muslim immigrants. Britain has experienced an epidemic of child rape and sex trafficking for the same reason.

Sure, you know absolutely nothing about the ingrained misogyny in the cultures that are invading Europe, and haven't the foggiest idea that the bulk of this current wave consists of unmarried men between 18 and 30, but it appears that Austrian women know a lot more about the subject than you. They have every right to defend themselves against the potential rape that will most surely come with this invasion of young, misogynistic men.

It may be high time you educate yourself about the topic so you can comment with intelligence instead of these mindless platitudes.

Not surprised there is panic and backlash to European Leaders going with almost open door policy to a group of people from culture that has little tolerance for the social climate of the nations they are ultimately looking to end up in. But I am surprised they are rushing to obtain the very guns that America is demonized for owning.

In case you haven't noticed, when it comes to religious hatred and intolerance, we've little room to talk...or do you not remember Jim Crow? And organized religion in the Deep South actively assisted in keeping Jim Crow in place.

I've been to Dubai many times (it comes with a career in the Navy), my wife has a cousin and a niece in Riyadh (whom I met a few years back during a family reunion in Manila), and I have a niece who flies with Qatar Airlines, and they all live well and are happy.

And that's the thing - so many people on the Right are so convinced that the ME is a hellhole of religious intolerance. While it is true that there is significantly more religious intolerance there than here, it's not nearly so bad as many here in America (including most conservatives) seem to think. What ISIS and the Taliban do is NOT representative of the whole region - it's not even close.

I encourage you to go to Dubai, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, and Riyadh, so that you can see what the people there are really like. And get to know the locals - if you do, chances are you'll find (as I did) that the great majority of them are - religious and cultural norms notwithstanding - no different from people you meet every day walking down Main Street, U.S.A.

Oh, and one more thing - my son told me of a time he was eating at a local BBQ stand in the Philippines, and he saw a friend there that he knew was Muslim. My son said, "Hey - you're Muslim! I thought you guys couldn't eat pork!" His friend replied, "You Christians aren't supposed to drink alcohol, right?" And the guy had a point - those in the Church of which I am a member are not supposed to drink alcohol. But that also made me remember the time I was at a bar in Dubai and I watched a local Arab - dressed in robes and all - downing beers with the rest of us.

Just something to think about.

Please back up the claims you made that I bolded above. And please avoid using a "broad-brush" fallacy by pointing to the actions of a few and attributing it to the culture of a whole...because with everything you point out, I can almost certainly point out far worse here in America, committed by so-called "Christians". As I posted before, I've no problem with good, law-abiding citizens owning firearms for self-protection...but I do have a real problem with fear-mongering when such is blowing things far out of proportion to reality.

The major cities in the middle east especially the oil rich nations have to tolerate infidels and non Islamic attitudes in the major cities to attract investment. What on earth has Jim Crow got to do with Islam? We are talking about Islam? But again you have to deflect away to then constantly attack Christianity.

However, of those who have traveled by sea through the Mediterranean, 69% are male adults, 18% are children and 13% are female adults.

You just don't get it, do you? Intolerance is intolerance. Religious intolerance, racial intolerance, ethnic intolerance, gender intolerance, LGBT intolerance...they're all intolerance - it's all prejudice. Prejudice in any form is still prejudice...and what I pointed out to you was that the different forms of prejudiced are often INTERTWINED - the example being how the "Christian" churches in the Deep South actively supported Jim Crow.

That's not deflection - that's forcing you to look at our own not-so-distant past, to examine our own society's great sins, that you may see what's going on over there in better context. Yeah, they ARE having to "tolerate infidels"...just like the racists in America are having to tolerate a black guy in the White House. Their economically-forced tolerance is changing their societies, making them safer, more tolerant, more modern as a whole...and if you would visit there, you'd see the result is not bad...and it's slowly, surely, irresistibly getting better.

I am talking about today, all you have is harping on the past whether that be slavery to justify your white guilt agenda or whether that be the Crusades to justify your anti Christian agenda.

We are today and today Islam is a more violent religion than Christianity.

Good reference (though that's only one of three claims I asked you to prove). But here's the difference - when conservatives see "Male adults" in the reference, most of them can't conceive of anything other than a mass of terrorists or would-be terrorists out to bring down the societies in western Europe, whereas most liberals would realize that the reason that most are male adults is because they're the ones who are most able to travel and, once they arrive at their destinations, the ones most able to find work to send money home to help the family survive.

And if you'll think about it, that's not really that different from the illegals who come to America - most are male, because they're the ones who are best able to work and send money home to the family:

The undoc*u*mented immi*grant pop*u*la*tion in the US is dis*pro*por*tion*ately male. Men between the ages of 18 and 39 make up 35% of the undoc*u*mented immi*grant pop*u*la*tion in the US, com*pared with 14% of the US-born pop*u*la*tion and 18% of the legal immi*grant pop*u*la*tion. Com*pared with the US-born pop*u*la*tion, the undoc*u*mented immi*grant pop*u*la*tion includes few older peo*ple and chil*dren, exclud*ing cit*i*zens or legal res*i*dents who are mem*bers of mixed-status families.

See this is the thing you don't get, you probably see me as some backward right wing nut who thinks all of these people are going to be rapists and terrorists. Well no your perception is wrong. All I am saying is the effects of predominantly young muslim men flooding a liberal european nation has only seen sexual offences sky rocket because a sizable minority see young european non muslim women as fair game and the terror risk and crime increase.

The majority of these people don't really care how they get the money, all they know is they get a free house and a weekly allowance. They can do with that what they will.

Ah. So according to you, we should ignore our past, ignore any lessons or context we might glean from our understanding of what we did then...even when that past is still within living memory of a significant portion of Americans today.

And FYI, I am a strong Christian. It's just that I recognize the fact that mainstream "Christianity" - including the Catholics and the protestant churches - are not Christianity. Their bloody past - which includes the great majority of their history - disqualifies them.

We are today and today Islam is a more violent religion than Christianity.

1. Any violence at all (past or present) in the Name of God disqualifies that religion from being the true Religion.

2. If you understood the reasons behind the violence half as well as you seem to think, you'd understand that what drives the violence isn't religion, but poverty, revolt against tyranny, and - in the case of Syria - climate change (which greatly exacerbated the poverty).

Look at my signature line below - truer words were never said: people who are hungry and out of a job are the stuff of which dictatorships are made. And this is not a new thing. The ancient Greek philosopher Plutarch said it best:

“An imbalance between rich and poor is the oldest and most fatal ailment of all republics.”

Did I ever say we should ignore the past? We are talking about present day events but that does not fit your narrative.

If you actually knew what was going on in Syria you would know this is a war between different sects of Islam.

Smart people. If you live in a home, you most likely have a fire extinguisher. If you bring a lot of flammable items into your home...you probably better get a few fire extinguishers. Not fear...just common sense.

Europe is ****ed. Some of them are smart enough to see it. Canada wont be far behind them. We...well...we better be paying attention. I HOPE I am completely wrong. I highly doubt that I am.

For the second time, I ask you to prove your claim that I bolded above.

And concerning the last sentence, it's been shown by several studies and real-world experiments (references available if you want) that it costs less in taxpayer dollars to house the homeless in cheap apartments than it does to leave them on the street. The takeaway is basically this: it's doggone hard for a homeless person to get a job - he's got no permanent address, no way to reliably show up for work showered, shaved, and wearing clean clothes...and homeless people always have a significantly higher crime rate, which leads to significantly more taxpayer dollars being spent for law enforcement, courts, jails, and emergency rooms.

And if you knew the immigrant community half as well as you suppose, you'd know in your heart that the vast majority of them do NOT just sit on their butts waiting for the government dole, but instead they get out there and do their level best to find work. Such has always been what the great majority of immigrants do....though assumptions such as yours are nothing new, too.

These people should not be coming in the first place whether they claim welfare or work in a low skilled job claiming welfare while they are in that job.
