A wise man once said, the only thing we have to fear, is fear itself. And don't give me the line that someone with a firearm isn't afraid...because if he or she wasn't afraid at least to some extent, he or she wouldn't have bought the firearm to begin with.

That said, I don't want to stop good, law-abiding people from being able to buy firearms for self-protection...but to do so without regulation is tragically silly.

Sure, you know absolutely nothing about the ingrained misogyny in the cultures that are invading Europe, and haven't the foggiest idea that the bulk of this current wave consists of unmarried men between 18 and 30, but it appears that Austrian women know a lot more about the subject than you. I've been to Dubai many times (it comes with a career in the Navy), my wife has a cousin and a niece in Riyadh (whom I met a few years back during a family reunion in Manila), and I have a niece who flies with Qatar Airlines, and they all live well and are happy.

And that's the thing - so many people on the Right are so convinced that the ME is a hellhole of religious intolerance. While it is true that there is significantly more religious intolerance there than here, it's not nearly so bad as many here in America (including most conservatives) seem to think. What ISIS and the Taliban do is NOT representative of the whole region - it's not even close.

I encourage you to go to Dubai, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, and Riyadh, so that you can see what the people there are really like. And get to know the locals - if you do, chances are you'll find (as I did) that the great majority of them are - religious and cultural norms notwithstanding - no different from people you meet every day walking down Main Street, U.S.A.

Oh, and one more thing - my son told me of a time he was eating at a local BBQ stand in the Philippines, and he saw a friend there that he knew was Muslim. My son said, "Hey - you're Muslim! I thought you guys couldn't eat pork!" His friend replied, "You Christians aren't supposed to drink alcohol, right?" And the guy had a point - those in the Church of which I am a member are not supposed to drink alcohol. But that also made me remember the time I was at a bar in Dubai and I watched a local Arab - dressed in robes and all - downing beers with the rest of us.

And FYI, I am a strong Christian. It's just that I recognize the fact that mainstream "Christianity" - including the Catholics and the protestant churches - are not Christianity. Their bloody past - which includes the great majority of their history - disqualifies them.



1. Any violence at all (past or present) in the Name of God disqualifies that religion from being the true Religion.

2. If you understood the reasons behind the violence half as well as you seem to think, you'd understand that what drives the violence isn't religion, but poverty, revolt against tyranny, and - in the case of Syria - climate change (which greatly exacerbated the poverty).

Look at my signature line below - truer words were never said: people who are hungry and out of a job are the stuff of which dictatorships are made. And this is not a new thing. The ancient Greek philosopher Plutarch said it best:

And concerning the last sentence, it's been shown by several studies and real-world experiments (references available if you want) that it costs less in taxpayer dollars to house the homeless in cheap apartments than it does to leave them on the street. The takeaway is basically this: it's doggone hard for a homeless person to get a job - he's got no permanent address, no way to reliably show up for work showered, shaved, and wearing clean clothes...and homeless people always have a significantly higher crime rate, which leads to significantly more taxpayer dollars being spent for law enforcement, courts, jails, and emergency rooms.

And if you knew the immigrant community half as well as you suppose, you'd know in your heart that the vast majority of them do NOT just sit on their butts waiting for the government dole, but instead they get out there and do their level best to find work. Such has always been what the great majority of immigrants do....though assumptions such as yours are nothing new, too.
