Marine Corps could expand training mission in Ukraine

Latest from OSCE Special Monitoring Mission (SMM) to Ukraine

On 26 September the SMM observed at least 36 tanks (type unknown) at the training area in “LPR”-controlled Kruhlyk (31km south-west of Luhansk). A day earlier the SMM spotted at the same training area one heavy multiple launch thermobaric rocket system (TOS-1 Buratino, 220mm).

1024px-TOS-1_MRL.jpg

The TOS-1 'Buratino,' or 'Heavy Flamethrower System,' is a feared weapon -- a 220 mm multiple-launch rocket system (MLRS) which fires thermobaric rockets. These rockets are
designed to literally light the air on fire, generating intense heat and flame but also burning all of the oxygen out of an area. This makes them extremely effective against buildings,
bunkers and fortifications, and lightly-armored vehicles since it can easily kill people inside enclosed spaces.

No Buratinos have ever been exported to Ukraine. So how will Russia explain that a TOS-1 Buratino was just spotted by the OSCE on a training ground in Lugansk province?

Ukrainian pilot: 'I was kidnapped by separatists and taken to Russia'

Savchenko says that Russia security officers took her across Ukrainian border in 2014

The Russian court denied a defense request for polygraph tests. A defense request to use a projector to show maps of the area has been denied. Lt. Savchenko is testifying in Russian which is not her native tongue. The Russian deceased journalists received their mortal wounds at noon ... however the defense has presented a video published by Open Russia which shows Lt Savchenko already captured and blindfolded by rebels at Metalist, Luhansk province, Ukraine. The video capture time is 10:30 am. Lt. Savchenko was then taken to the city of Luhansk and interrogated (available on video). Lt. Savchenko testified that she was transferred to Russia a week after her capture in Ukraine. "People, led by the 'Defence Minister of the LNR,' handed me over to people in masks, speaking with Russian accents (i.e. native Russian-language speakers).

Blockade whips up food prices on peninsula

Thursday 01 October, 2015

One week into the economic blockade of Crimea food prices has gone up 1.5 times, journalist Oleh Leusenko writes in his blog Oct. 1. The activists at the road blocks on the 3 roads leading from mainland Ukraine to Crimea are guarded by 300 police and border troops, Kherson oblast governor says. The activists have stopped 429 trucks with food going to Crimea. For greater safety of the activists, the road blocks were moved 10 km inside the Ukrainian territory, the governor says. The activists, many of them Crimean Tatars, live in tents and are fed using field kitchens.

Empty trucks can go freely into and out of Ukraine, same as the cars and persons crossing the border on foot. Reports from Crimea indicate that Ukrainian food, plentiful a week ago, is beginning to disappear from the shops.

Ukraine, rebels agree full small weapons withdrawal

Trust but verify. Eastern Ukraine is currently a "frozen conflict" ... neither at total peace nor at total kinetic war. The Russians have "escalation dominance" and will use this to increase tensions when it suits the Kremlin ... such as diverting Kyiv's attention from enacting reforms on the home front. Such a policy also leads to what is known as "Ukraine fatigue" which weakens Western support. Will the Russians as required by Minsk II withdraw their troops, hand over control of the border, and allow free internationally monitored elections in Donbass ... all required by the end of 2015? No. Absolutely not.

Russia will put a damper on direct military activity in eastern Ukraine as it wages kinetic warfare in Syria. The Kremlin however will continue to destabilize Ukraine utilizing asymmetric tactics such as terrorist bombings etc.

The unofficial word is that Moscow is in secret negotiations with Kyiv to settle the disposition of Ukrainian POW Lieutenant Nadiya Savchenko, currently on trial in Donetsk, Russia. The Russian Federation's international reputation has suffered tremendously due to its persecution of Lt. Savchenko. Moscow first floated the proposal that MP/Lt. Savchenko be allowed to serve her prison term (Moscow has ordered that she be found guilty) in Ukraine. The proposal now is for an exchange ... MP/Lt. Savchenko for two Russian military intelligence soldiers captured in Ukraine. This exchange would reportedly occur on 31 December 2015. Nadiya has been in Russian captivity since July of 2014.

Dutch Safety Board set to say MH17 downed by Russian-made missile, but not point finger

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The Dutch Safety Board, issuing long-awaited findings on Tuesday of its investigation into the crash of a Malaysian passenger plane over eastern Ukraine, is expected to say it was downed by a Russian-made Buk missile but not say who was responsible for firing it. MH17 was shot down over territory held by pro-Russia rebels in eastern Ukraine on July 17, 2014, killing all 298 people aboard, most of them Dutch citizens.

It is widely expected that the investigation will say the plane was brought down by a Russian-made Buk missile, although under rules governing international flight crash investigations, the board does not have the authority to apportion blame.

An international criminal investigation led by Dutch chief investigator Fred Westerbeke is nearing completion. Westerbeke says the purpose of the investigation is to bring those responsible to justice. A court venue must be decided. In July, Russia vetoed a UN resolution proposed by five nations to establish a UN criminal tribunal to prosecute those responsible for shooting down the MH17 passenger airliner killing all 298 aboard.
