Crimea

I don't really know what else they could have done...... War between Moscow and Kiev wouldn't have ended in Kiev's favor.

All things in consideration, the Ukraine was not doing too bad.

All things turned sour when NATO turned up with sandwiches.

I think that the cost of these little treats (trinkets) from Nuland and McCain was pretty high.

Calm

True. The US and Euros aren't going to go to war to get it back, so it's looks like Putin has pulled a fair acompli.
I agree. During the past two years of occupation, Moscow has militarized Crimea.

However, no one should confuse Russia's nuclear arsenal with her legal and ethical failings. Might does not make right.

What Moscow has wrought vis-a-vis Ukraine (Crimea/Donbas) is thoroughly illegal and a violation of all modern international conventions.

Oh, I wouldn't worry about people calling the Kremlin a bastion of moralism anytime soon. Outside of the 21st century's version of Tankies, amyway

Medvedev Tells Crimean Pensioners 'No Money' for Pension Increase

May. 24 2016

During his visit to Crimea, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev was confronted by frustrated pensioners, the Meduza news website reported on Tuesday.

“What is 8,000 rubles ($120)! It's misery!” said one woman.

“There's just no money. When we find the money — we'll do it.” replied the prime minister before advising the crowd to stay strong and hold on.

Russian pensions were indexed in February. Pensions are usually indexed twice a year to account for inflation, but the government has refused to index pensions a second time this year.

No additional rubles for struggling pensioners in Crimea, but plenty of funding for the military on the peninsula.

Putin makes it easier to brand any group in Russia or occupied Crimea a ‘foreign agent’

From the lips of Russian Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko on Friday...

Russia does not want any longer to “sit quietly by and watch” as ethnic Russians and Russian speakers “in certain former republics of the USSR” are subject to become objects of “oppression and persecution” regarding their education and language rights. “Russian compatriots beyond the borders of Russia wherever they live must have the opportunity to preserve their ties with their historical motherland, to study Russian language and culture, and to feel themselves to be Russian [‘russkiye’] people.”

And she spewed this garbage from Occupied Crimea.

Russian State Duma Strips Opposition Deputy Ponomarev of His Powers

The only Russian lawmaker to vote against the annexation of Crimea was just booted out of parliament

According to the Novaya Gazeta newspaper, the vote was 413 in favor of removing Ponomarev's mandate and 3 opposed. However, the Duma was two-thirds empty and only 123 out of the 450 deputies were present. Evidently, proxy votes were counted as valid.

Ponomarev fled Russia last year after authorities began accusing him of financial crimes. Of his 45 aides in parliament, 9 had been forced to leave Russia since law-enforcers had opened a total of 20 criminal cases. Ponomarev said he had been an MP for nine years, a period he characterized "a time of hopes and the ridding of many illusions."

Putin’s shell game with Crimea intended to cut importance and costs of the anschluss

Along with replacing governors with FSB/KGB Generals last week, Putin also disbanded the Crimean Federal District and incorporated Crimea into Russia's Southern Federal District. Crimea will now be an unwanted financial albatross to the Southern Federal District bosses in Krasnodar.
