Venice Holds Referendum On Seceding From Italy
Nearly two million residents in Veneto region, Italy, are expected to vote this week on whether to break away from Rome and form their own state, reported AFP, though the vote is not said to be legally binding nor officially sanctioned by the government.
About two million out of four million registered voters are expected to take part, while the latest polls show that roughly 60 percent of residents are in favour of independence.

"We no longer want to be part of a country that has gone to the wall. Nothing works anymore," said Indipendenza Veneta party coordinator Nicola Gardin.

So while the thing won't matter, legally, it's a powerful indication and something will have to be done about it... maybe greater autonomy or whatever... if it turns out "yes".

Having people near and dear to me from Vicenza and Caldogno, and knowing how they feel, I say Viva Il Veneto!

Well most of Italy use to be ruled by independant nationts unti the country was united during the 19th century.

And I guess that most people in the wealthy and progressive North are tired of paying the welfare checks for the conservative and poor South and would like more control over regional policy.

The return of the Republic of Venice! So nostalgic.

Honestly, I'd be pretty peeved with the central government too.

As here in Lombardy region people would like to join Switzerland, it will never happen...

I'm sure you didn't intend to, but that comment reminds me of the U.S.

Is there a country on this planet that does not have an east-west or north-south divide?

Terrific.

This is likely the future that awaits us all. Smaller units of like-minded people all with access to common markets.

What's wrong with promoting diversity?
