In Spain protests are growing over a proposed new abortion law, which would allow terminations only in case of rape or danger to life.

Weird how the Spanish government is on such a backwards path.

I hope they will be punished for that in the next Spanish elections.

No wonder the Catalonians want independence.

When you are nose to the precipice backward is the better choice.
;)

Spain has a problem, not enough population, not enough births.
I would think some other solution would work better,
like large tax incentives for couples to have children.
I suppose it is only fitting, that a strong protest start
where the Reconquista started.

I thought Spain was fairly seriously catholic.

Has absolutely nothing to do with this. It is the Catholic Church that has infested the conservative PP party and has been pushing for this bs based on religious dogma and nothing else. The Catholic Church has always been a big part of Spanish society but since democracy came into effect they have lost more and more influence... to such a degree that they have next to no power any more. The only place they have some influence is in the PP conservative party hard liners... people who most likely were linked to the Franco regime.

Fact is this law change is extreme unpopular, even among the PP party, but is being pushed despite this.. the Prime Minister has even refused a free vote on the subject and is forcing those against the law to vote for it.. which has already caused a few resignations.

Does it make any sense whatsoever....to drive women away from reproduction when you are trying to increase it?

Likely, females will try very hard to avoid getting pregnant to be free of this legislation....or simply move out of the country.

Wait, are you implying women don't try to not get pregnant if they don't want to be?

Of course they "Try", as does every woman in the same position....yet, millions of women have unwanted pregnancies regardless.

Thus....get out or do not "put" out.
