Homosexuality and Turkey.

l think you didnt read my response!

it doesnt mean " father of turk "

and l am proud of him............

He was chummy with the Bolsheviks in the beginning (a capital sin in my book). And then ruled the country with an iron fist. Modernization and secularization are great, but not at any cost. And, of course, his statist economic policies had guaranteed that Turkey remains far behind other European countries, even as he prodded it, not very gently, into the new era. I understand that options might have been limited, and I am not qualified to make some kind of final judgement.

But even if he had done everything, absolutely everything, exactly to my liking, I would not want him to be idolized and made into a symbol of the nation. "It's just not done, in the polite society".

Diplomatic community shows solidarity with gay Turkish referee

TURKEY - Diplomatic community shows solidarity with gay Turkish referee

Quite a sad reversal of fortunes considering that the Ottoman empire legalized homosexuality in 1858 (Northern Ireland on the other hand legalized it in 1982 after being forced to do so by the European community, despite a virulent campaign against doing so) I hope that people like yourselfs have the best of luck in catching up.

Turkey is not part of Europe and this is a topic that has only to do with Turkey. Why is this in the Europe subforum? Please move it to the middle eastern subforum or international politics.

Turkey certainly has issues of a lack of tolerance for its LGBT minority. It's 40-50 years behind the West, but no more. I well remember a time in the UK where anyone could and would be sacked if it became known they were gay. Turkey has come on in leaps and bounds in recent years and I've a large number of gay friends in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir who are open and active gay rights campaigners. The best-known and most influential General Secretary of the International Lesbian and Gay Association (the most important worldwide LGBT NGO) was Kurşad Kahramanoğlu, a Turk, and the national LGBT groups (KAOS, Lambda, Pink Life) operate openly.

BTW, there's quite a bit of evidence to suggest that Atatürk may have been gay, although you could be gaoled for 5 years for saying so, and the suggestion is the reason why YouTube was blocked from operating in Turkey between 2007 and 2010.

Cue the outrage.
