I'd speculate that the Conservative party wouldn't agree to proportional representation which would have left the Lib Dems to turn to the unwanted Labour Party or force another general election where their chance of power sharing would probably have gone.

We'll eventually find out in Nick Clegg's memoirs.

I know a lot of people feel like that. The Liberals were once a radical party that were prepared to take on unconventional policies in order to widen freedom and democracy but Clegg has turned them into a party that talks liberal but acts conservative. Lust for power has corrupted them as surely as it does to everyone that has even a little of it.

They will never get my vote again because they cannot be trusted with it.
We are negotiating about dividing a pizza and in the meantime israel is eating it (With thanks to justabubba)
If Israel were to take someone and cut of his head, some of you would post that he still has arms and legs. (With thanks to Serenity)

The fact that the presence of any Tory MP's at all in the Scottish Parliament is solely due to a proportional representation system which they fought against is such a juicy irony.

There's a Council by-election here at the end of the month, caused by the resignation in spite by a local Tory who was censured by his own party for bullying! The LibDems are the only hope of dislodging the Tory placeman, so they'll get my vote anyway. I met the LibDem candidate last night, who spent most of the time disassociating herself from the national organisation. That is pretty much their MO, Their powerbase is in the local parties, where their councillors are generally hardworking and effective, whereas they seem to find it near impossible to break through at a national level. The last few decades have seen their Parliamentary party hovering around the thirty mark, a home for the protest vote, especially at by-elections!

Eternity is an awfully long time, especially towards the end.

Hi, I'm from Europe, where the history comes from.
