US veterans join the oil pipeline protest at Standing Rock, North Dakota...

"US military veterans continue to arrive at Standing Rock, with up to 3,500 expected in total. They are due to meet with tribal elders to discuss how they can best help the ongoing protest, marked by heavy police force and bitterly cold weather conditions.
Members of “Veterans Stand for Standing Rock,” who have been told to bring supplies such as gas masks, earplugs and body armor (but no drugs, alcohol or weapons), plan to form a human shield around protesters to protect them against rubber bullets and the police."

“One person got his head split wide open. I’ve got two sons that were shot up with beanbags, which don’t have beans but lead inside,” said Guy Dull Knife, a US Army veteran at the site. “They’ve been treating us pretty bad, but we’re still here.”

Also on the way to the protest, doctors trained in Cuba...

"While the Facebook statement did not give details about the size of the delegation or when it is expected to arrive, the announcement comes as thousands of U.S. Army veterans are expected to arrive at the Oceti Sakowin camp this weekend in anticipation of the Dec. 5 eviction notice given to the camp by the Army Corps of Engineers and North Dakota Governor, Jack Dalrymple."

It's been pretty active there, but only lightly reported-on. Might heat up soon, though, and get more attention.

I've been following the situation pretty closely and reading a lot of reports from people who went to support the effort. I really wish I was close enough and free enough to make the trip and stand up for such a good cause. Hundreds of years later and we're still ****ting on native Americans.

Who knew in 2016 one of the biggest issues facing many Americans would be access to drinkable water. Flint was the canary in the coal mine and we're now becoming aware of how bad our water supply is in many towns all over the country. I feel like we're sliding backwards in many regards.

My wife's Metis (half Native) and she's been following this story. If she were ten years younger I doubt I'd be able to keep her from heading there.
