White House to freeze new coal mining efforts as it reviews industry

Starting to get some quality posts...............Is it a trend? Or just a fluke?

To make electricity so expensive that poor people can't afford it?

My electric bill dropped by 30% since 2008. So, that's not it.

Well, there goes West Virginia and Pennsylvania as far as the Democrats getting their electoral votes, and of course Wyoming, Montana, and Kentucky, but I don't think they would have carried those three anyway.

If they nominate Bernie, you can add several more states to that list, like Ohio and Colorado for starters. Nevada, New Mexico and Indiana will not even be close.

We need more strategically planned wind farms. They work in many rural areas. I would love to see some along the CA coast line, the Hamptons, Long Island, Palm Beach....

I bet the coal industry hates Obama at this point.

So do most of the people that do that work to provide for their family.

yea that doesn't work well in the area's that are mostly coal mining states like,
PA, OH, WV, etc ...

I guess they can do without power since well liberals won't let anyone build nuclear power plants either.
solar panels won't work in those area's as well.

so what do you suppose they do about energy needs?

You may very well be correct. I like Bernie. I just disagree with every single position he takes, even the 2nd Amendment because on that one, I am to the right of the NRA. I'm to the left of Cruz on everything, except the 2nd Amendment... just to give you a better image of the scale.

Yeah, I totally feel your pain. I am Left on abortion and freedom from religion. But, I am pretty far Right on most everything else.

On guns, I am moderate---if you can call it that---in that I believe that the right to bear arms shall not be infringed. I'd rather see harsh laws enforced against people who use them illegally than make them illegal for anyone else, including ex felons (those who served their time and paid their dues) and crazy people (mostly because I do not trust the gvt to define crazy). I'd be OK if we banned guns for people who have been proven to misuse them, either by using them illegally or being reckless or careless with them.

Despite your anecdotal evidence electricity prices are rising

Water prices are rising the most in my neck of the woods. Energy prices here are lower than they've been in 20 years.

More jobs gone, courtesy of President Obama.

Irrelevant, this administration will be gone in a year, and I highly doubt that anyone in the coal industry is currently looking for coal, or will be for the forseeable future.

This announcement is politics, and meaningless politics too boot.

White House to freeze new coal mining efforts as it reviews industry

“The Obama administration will announce a moratorium Friday on new coal mining and an overhaul of how the U.S. manages coal development on public land, according to officials.

Interior Secretary Sally Jewell is expected to unveil the measures at midday Friday from New Mexico, one of five western states with tens of thousands of acres of federal land under lease.

The freeze on new mining is expected to give the government the opportunity completes a comprehensive review that would determine whether the fees charged to mining companies provide a fair return to taxpayers.

The moves will please environmentalists, who have urged the White House to reexamine how fossil fuel development contributes to climate change…………….

White House to freeze new coal mining ahead of review - NY Daily News

Obama said he would “change the way we manage our oil and coal resources, so that they better reflect the costs they impose on taxpayers and our planet.” ………….
Now there’s a novel idea………….. Why didn’t anyone think of that before?

Sort a like making folks who litter pay the bill for clean up thru fines………. I am down for that……. How’s about you?

I hope those of you voting for Obama love his dictatorial authoritarianism.

Hey you Obama lovers and his doings to kill the coal industry. Next time you look yourself in the mirror just remember that there are thousands who lost their livelihood and are on skid row at the moment because Obama did everything he could to kill the coal industry in this country. You know I was well invested in NRP a natural resources LP. I paid anywhere between 19-22 bucks a share. A company that paid solid dividends. Today after Obama it is worth .83 a share. I'm not the only one who has been hit with a loss because of the fecklessness of this administration catering to their special interest green wieners. God please send someone to Washington that will stick a fork in those who make policy catering to special interests!

I understand how our government works and the powers of all 3 branches.............you seems you're reading from the unauthorized source ...........therefore, confusion....

dictatorial authoritarianism. ...................really!

Please tell us exactly what it is you speak of

The increase in the cost of electricity is going to be felt by each family, more so by the poor than others.
Especially so when the cost of goods and services prices have to increase to cover their increased electricity cost.

The most effective green energy technology is one that can taken the old electricity generation industries and beat them at their own game without government life support. It'll be a better mouse trap which the market would beat a path to their door.

Everything that I've heard or read at this point indicates that we've not arrived at this point as of yet, hence actions such as the administration have taken.
It's called market distortion and manipulation.

What ever he is doing, isn't the vote of the elected representatives of the people. I haven't followed it. I assume he is directing the agencies in place to red tape any new applications.

What ever it is, he is acting alone, with congressional support.

Even if you could somehow burn coal with zero particulate emissions and zero carbon emissions, it would still be the dirtiest form of energy in use due to how we get it. We quite literally scar the land for millions of years when we blow up mountains to get coal. Sure you can reclaim that old mine into a field or something, but they don't rebuild the mountain and the mountain took hundreds of millions of years to form. Moreover, in the process of mining coal we destroy tens of thousands of miles of streams and hundreds of thousands of acres of diverse forests. Even the absolutely worst case scenario of natural gas fracking is still exponentially cleaner than coal mining.

The worst environmental disasters in U.S. history and the world's history were not due to nuclear or oil, but rather due to coal mining. Coal slurry spills alone are far worst than oil spills. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingston_Fossil_Plant_coal_fly_ash_slurry_spill

I say anything but coal. Natural gas, wind, nuclear, oil, solar, hydro, geothermal, hell even burning tires for electricity would be better than coal.

I would also point out that natural gas is killing coal far more than new regulations and automation has destroyed far more coal jobs over the years than anything else. The poorest state in the nation is also the one whose economy has always revolved around coal, that should tell you something.

If you give a **** about our environment, then this is not cool:

I'm pro-oil and pro-oil industry and think global warming is definitely hyped up. We are doing a lot of damage to our Earth that I'm concerned about but the damage being done is less on the GW side and more on the consumption and pollution side in regards to the resources being used and the rivers/oceans/air we are polluting. There's mounting evidence to suggest that our oceans will almost completely die off this century. China and many other countries have rivers so polluted you can't drink from them anymore.

Coal is antiquated and dirty, and should probably be phased out. There are lots of jobs associated with coal that are unfortunately going to be displaced, and I regret that. But the process to extract coal alone is damaging enough to our planet, when far better alternatives to fuel our energy grids exist in wind, solar, nuclear, etc. These alternatives are quickly becoming more and more economically viable too as the years progress and technology improves.
