A final draft of the Paris climate agreement has emerged after days – and years – of negotiation. Laurent Fabius, the president of COP21, called the final draft text “differentiated, fair, dynamic, durable, balanced and legally binding.” French President Francoise Hollande urged leaders to accept the text, calling this an “historic day for mankind”. and adding “This would be a major leap for mankind.”

Final draft of #COP21 reached – with a 1 year “opt out” clause | Watts Up With That?

It’s a fraud really, a fake. It’s just bull**** for them to say: ‘We’ll have a 2C warming target and then try to do a little better every five years.’ It’s just worthless words. There is no action, just promises. As long as fossil fuels appear to be the cheapest fuels out there, they will be continued to be burned.
-James Hansen

As I have been saying for years, going by government climate science itself, the goal of mitigating global warming will not be met by any of the politically or financially feasible proposals out there.

But COP 21 was a success in its main goal of lining the pockets of parasitic rent seeking organizations with money. And, of course, the problem of CAGW hasn't been solved. That will never happen since that would stop the gravy train.

It is much worse than that. German public tv is reporting that the treaty is binding.

We beat them up twice now...looks like they are cruising for another bruising!

Dozens of nations, including virtually all developed ones, are for the deal.

The main exception seems to be American Conservative Republicans and Libertarians.

As usual, they will have to be dragged kicking and screaming into the real world. Yet again.

Paris climate agreement will lower emissions and usher in end of the fossil fuel era.

It’s Saturday night, Laurent Fabius has brought his green hammer down on proceedings at the climate summit and the Paris Agreement is a done deal – now what will it all mean? Earlier this afternoon, while we were all still waiting for the announcement, the BBC’s Nicholas Owen interviewed Professor Mike Rosenberg of the IESE … Continue reading →

We'll see how just binding it is once its ratification fails in the US Senate.

Great deal !!

So China gets a pass on emissions and India gets an opt out to build more coal fired power stations unless she gets enough money from the west not to ... uh huh

I wonder who the Germans imagine will be doing the enforcing of any of this madness and what the penalty is going to be if they don't ?

no it won't end fossil fuel use because there is nothing there to replace them.

what it will do is drive up energy costs for working American's as energy companies have to try and comply with unrealistic political BS.
what is worse is the trillions of dollars that will be taken from working americans and given to other countries.

only zealots don't see how bad this deal is for America or the people that live here.

yep the US won't sign on to this just like they didn't sign the Kyoto treaty.

You all know it's not a treaty, right?

Mostly because the rest of the world recognizes the Conservatives in the US Senate are nitwits.

it is another non-binding agreement that carries no weight on anything.
the only nitwits are people that think we should hand over trillions of dollars to other countries and
hike energy bills on working American's.

Hansen's problem is that countries will not live up to these promises not that these problems are unsolvable or that global warming is false.

I'm glad Obama chose to tie this anchor around Hillary's neck.

I'm sure rest of the world couldn't care less about what you care about

Good luck with the policing of that voluntary treaty

Only time will tell whether COP 21 is successful. As Hansen notes, the deal is largely voluntary and the pledges from the collective governments are still projected to exceed the goal of a <2 degree warming (2.7 is the projection based on current pledges). And, indeed, COP 21 may end up proving to be even worse than doing nothing because it can act like the TSA in its security theatre which leads people to feeling safer and unwilling to do anything that would actually result in more safety. The same could be true of the COP 21 in that people could argue that they have done something and therefore they avoid doing something that actually helps with climate change.

On the other hand, we have a major international agreement from nearly every single country in the world, including the three largest polluters, based on an abundance of research, science, and diplomacy. That can be an excellent first step.

IT would be interesting to see her swim with it. Almost worth voting for her.

Then perhaps you can tell us which proposals will actually result in meaningful reduction in global warming.

In the primary, maybe. I think she is going to have a hard time selling a drag on the US economy while trying to get elected on a theme that the Democrats saved the economy. That's like rescuing someone from a bear because the lion was hungrier.

As Schwarzenegger said recently, we will have to give up eating meat with time, if we want to meet the targets.

That certainly makes me grumpy.

The interesting thing is that the only time we have seen a noticeable decline in the rate of CO2 was during the great global recession. At it's core, any CO2 control program is simply controlled recession.
