It lasts ten years and with the reduced electrical usage for the same light output, it will save consumers $100 in reduced power bills over the ten year life of the bulb.

The cost benefit factors of changing from CFL to LED, just aren't there.
CFL's cost about 1/5th that of LEDs and are only a few percent less efficient than LEDs(usually a 1 watt difference).
Yes - but if you break a CFL? And how/where do you dispose of your dead CFL bulbs?

Don't they contain mercury? Do we want a few hundred million of these in the landfill over the next 10 years?

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, lighting in the U.S. accounts for 22% of electricity consumption and costs American’s $58 billion a year. If every American home replaced just one light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb (your everyday energy “efficient” bulb), we would save $600 million per year in energy costs and prevent greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 800,000 cars.

    Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs
And that's for just one CFL per household.

The CFL's I've used have largely lasted several years.
    They go into the trash.
There is already mercury in the soil.

There is already oil in the ground, but I hope you don't dispose of your used motor oil by dumping it in the vacant lot down the road.

    No I don't do that.
Really though, the amount of worse crap already in landfills and the soils, wouldn't be greatly enhanced by a tiny amount of mercury.

Ten million spent by the gov to develop a bulb nobody is going to buy is not penny wise. Private industry will make bulbs that get the most bang for the buck as the technology progresses. Gov on the other hand feels free to squander tax payer dollars on pie in the sky BS which IMO is pound foolish.

Electricity costs aren't a joke nowadays. I'd gladly buy a bucketful of those bulbs to replace all the bulbs in my house if it will conserve the enormous electricity costs. $50 a bulb is puny compared to the costs it will save in utilities in my opinion

I would much rather "my government" spend ten million on something developed in the USA, made in the USA, and designed to save money over the long haul, than have "my government" spend billions and/or trillions on trying to win the hearts and minds of non-Americans in foreign lands.

How tiny is it if 100 million households replace upwards of a dozen, or more, light bulbs with CFL's, and then in 5-10 years they all find their way into landfills?

I know there are some places that are starting a recycle program just for CFL bulbs. Perhaps you could google search for it in your area?
