Arvada Police arrest 11-year-old over 'inappropriate' stick figure drawing - KDVR

His therapist told him to draw whenever he got angry to calm himself down. He drew a person with a gun pointed at other people and wrote "teacher must die". The boy has ADHD and is in therapy.

Do you think he should have been arrested for this?

from my teaching experience, I would say that a big % of "ADHD" cases are bull****. just a lame ass excuse that bad parents use to explain why their kid is a retard that doesn't know how to behave.

I think arresting the kid was over the top. kick his ass out of school for a while until his "therapy" kicks in and he learns to control himself.

trying to recall any incident which more epitomized overreaction

thank you dr. oscar.

nothing but sarcasm to add, yet again. somehow I am not surprised.

seriously, insulting parents of children with adhd or add or whatever is what's insulting. not that i'm surprised about you calling kids retards. i can't believe you ever actually taught.

Oh, but he's right. ADHD and ADD are the most over diagnosed "diseases". It's impossible to detect and easy to cure. So, if a child just won't behave, the doctor prescribes Ritalin and away they go. Ritalin will make the child more subdued, but that isn't always the fix. For example, my cousin was diagnosed with ADHD when he went to Kindergarten. He acted out in class, was loud and didn't obey. The doctor gave him Ritalin and it worked. He behaved. Later, another doctor diagnosed that my cousin had a hypersensitivity to sugar. Sugar was almost as good as speed to this kid. So, his mom took him off of soda, McDonald's fries (loaded with sugar if you didn't know) and any thing else she knew had sugar in it. The result was a child that didn't need Ritalin. Ritalin is just the lazy doctor and parent's way of making a child behave.

ok, but what does this have to do with the OP ... you know the topic of this thread?

they are over diagnosed, true. that doesn't make the parents bad OR make the kids retards, though. that's my issue.

No - what the 'adhd' diagnosis as a fashion-statement does is marginalize the issues that kids with SERIOUS problems do face.

Now they're all given the swath - and those who need help are grouped in with the kids who are just out of control and need strong parenting.

seriously, most of these kids diagnosed with ADHD/ADD are just spoiled brats who have never been disciplined. the over diagnosis of these disorders detracts from those who actually suffer from them. I would've thought you'd have been smart enough to get the point.

and FWIW, are you ever going to add anything of substance to a thread? or just continue to stalk me around trolling?

um yeah...that's why I said big % and not "all" or "most". too many of these kids are over/mis diagnosed and dosed up on ritalin or some other drug when what they really need is some actual parenting.

Follow the money. ADHD = Special Education Classes = More Jobs = More $$$$.

maggie, that makes no sense. addd or adhd is not diagnosed by teachers.

No. The behavior problems are...

The assessment of students with disabilities occurs across several settings. In some cases, a disorder is suspected early in a child's life, and appropriate evaluations are conducted before the elementary school years in order for the child to qualify for early intervention services. In other cases, classroom teachers suspect the existence of a disorder and use a variety of pre-referral strategies and assessments to determine whether a full evaluation and referral to special education are necessary.....

so how does money enter into this? school receives money for special ed, school spends money for special ed. who benefits? the kids.

first year teaching I had a class full of them. they took every ADD/ADHD kid in 8th grade and lumped them into my physical science class. 14 kids, about half of them were 2-3 grades behind so I had 16-17 year old 8th graders. All but 3 of them were just bad kids. but because they'd been "diagnosed with ADD/ADHD" the school got special ed money for them.

the school gets money for special ed, it wastes it on kids who are not special ed but spoiled undisciplined turds, who suffers? the true special ed kids.

sometimes it really is that simple.

tell us your technique for distinguishing between those who are actually afflicted and those we are just 'bad kids'

You've got to be kidding me. Kids benefit from being drugged? Benefit from being misdiagnosd? Benefit from being labeled? Benefit from being given medical excuses for their lack of self-control? Benefit from parents who can now fully abdicate their parental responsibilities because "He was born that way???"

Look up the stats. 8-10% of children are suspected to have ADHD -- suspected by a bunch of total idiots. Give me a freakin' break.

Methylphenidate is very similar to both amphetamines and cocaine, a drug used to treat attention deficit-disorder, and (ADHD) attention deficit hyper-activity, in mostly children. Children are being diagnosed with a list of behaviors that In 1987 was literally voted into existence by the American Psychiatric Association and inserted in the DSM-IV, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Within one year 500,000 children in the U.S. were diagnosed with the disorder.

Follow the money to the drug manufacturers as well. We are makes druggies of our children. And no one, not even their parents, gives a damn.

with the proper encouragement, bad kids can be taught to control themselves, kids who truely have ADD/ADHD cannot.

I think it was little over the top the child was arrested. I think he just needs therapy and maybe get a second opinion of ADD/ADHD. That is such a crutch for so many parents because they simply cant control their children. He simply needs to be put in an alternative school or class to asses his real problems.

i rarely respond to you. do you really think your characterization of kids as retards added anything to this thread?

Can you point out where he characterized the kids as "retards"?
