32% increase in UCLA tuition fee

University of Calif. OKs 32 percent hike - Education- msnbc.com

The vote by the Board of Regents in a windowless University of California, Los Angeles, meeting room took place as the drone of protesters could be heard from a plaza outside. Scores of police in riot gear guarded the building.

The 32 percent increase will push the cost of an undergraduate education at California's premier public schools to over $10,000 a year by next fall, about triple the cost of a decade ago. The fees, the equivalent of tuition, do not include the cost of housing, board and books.
According to the rest of the article, there were big protests on campus involving people locking themselves in buildings, and blocking exit of the governing board members from the building for several hours. This was obviously not received well.

I remember at my university a couple of years before I went there, a provincial tuition freeze expired and the board of governors raised tuition by 50%. It affected everyone's programs.

A friend of mine pays $36,000 per year where she goes in the U.S. My entire degree cost less than that here in Canada in one of the top five schools.

Is the cost of tuition in the U.S. justifiably high, or is it highway robbery?

Re: 32% increase in UCLA tuition fee

UC students are some spoiled mother****ers. The price of their high quality education has skyrocketed by a whopping $2500 to almost $10k a year. The cost of a 4 year degree at UC is less than one year's tuition at many private schools.

The high tuition in the US is justifiable at some schools. Although Harvard spends something like $100k per pupil per year, they only recover about 30% of that in tuition with the rest being offset by the endowment. However, many schools are just plain ripoffs. The skyrocketing tuition costs can largely be traced to the availability of huge amounts of easy credit in the form of student loans.

When the government guarantees that every student can take out tens of thousands of dollars in loans to fulfill their dream of becoming an Art History major with a minor in Dance, schools respond by jacking up their tuition even more, as the student can now afford more than they otherwise could have.

Oh, I would certainly put myself in the idiot category. I took out an asston of loans for a generic undergrad degree that I could have gotten for next to nothing at a SUNY or CUNY without much/any change in educational quality.

Mostly I just have a hard time understanding how they can complain about having to pay $10k a year to attend some of the best schools in the country, not counting the quality financial aid they offer.

I guess soon we will be in the situation where only the rich can afford to educate their children. That should help put more distance between the haves and the havenots...

Re: 32% increase in UCLA tuition fee

That is why I love North Carolina higher education (the UNC System).

$2,345 for In-State tuition at a fairly uncrowded, damn good school.

Re: 32% increase in UCLA tuition fee

$10,000/year is expensive? I have no pity for them at all.
