Texas kicks creationism to the curb.

Many areas:

Class divisions: Texans have a much greater feeling of 'if you're wealthy, then you're better than those who aren't'

You haven't been around many rich people have you? This is a pretty common thing anywhere you go.

Religion: Baptist churches and even more fundamentalist offshoots of same are the most common, by far. It's very common to find anger and condemnation towards those who don't follow the doctrines of the fundamentalists. All non-'Christians' are treated with utter contempt.

Southern Baptists to be exact. Yes they are scary especially to me as a Mormon (they'd burn me at the stake if they could). However, they aren't the majority by far and their biggest roots are in the african american areas not so much in other white/ethnic groups.

Social safety nets: There are few by comparison to other states. If you're destitute, homeless, starving... tough. You get to die. There are safety nets in government, but there are huge movements by the people to do away with them completely.

Yes, tough. There is no excuse are far as many of us are concerned for being in that situation. There are way too many options to keep you off the streets. Even McDonalds can pay you a wage that will put you in a cheap apt. and keep you fed. But you also forgot the massive amounts we donate to charities, homeless shelters, women's shelters, etc.

Racism: Huge divisions between races by comparison to other states. There are some rural towns that only took down governmentally sponsored anti-racial signs about 20 years ago. That's still a generation but it's kind of amazing. People talk openly against black people, even today.

Can't argue with you there. Places like Vider and other backwoods are pretty well known. The key here is backwoods. But then black racism on other classes is pretty well known as well. I get to deal with it in Houston and Austin of all places. Oh lets not forget about 4chan either.

Politics:If you're going to vote Democrat, don't advertise it. In the 2004 election, there was a great deal of vandalism of cars and houses that had Kerry stickers or signs. Texas is the reddest of red states.

What backwoods are you living in? Democrat districts make up 40% of Texas. Our state senate is close to 50/50 albiet our democrats are conservative than those in Kalifornistan. We had serious anti-McCain vandalism here during the election year.

Family: It's very common to see situations where the man is the absolute lord and master of his house. The wife does as she is told, period! The husband tells her who she can have as friends, when she can leave the house, whether or not she can use the phone or the Internet, etc.

Huh?

These are just a few of the conservative values I see regularly in Texas. There are, of course, a few more liberal areas, such as Austin and Denton. But, for the most part, these are the values that people follow if they want to be considered good Republicans and good 'Christians' by their peers. Anyone who doesn't want to follow those values is beneath their contempt, and these people are in the vast majority.

Sir, you need to remove your blinders and view our state with some open eyes. You'll find alot of surprising things here that your liberal contempt has blinded you to.

Texas is the leader in alternative energy production and venture capital. We have strong social initiatives for family but we also have strong social initiatives....to beat the crap out of guys who beat their wives. We stomp on social liberal initiatives not because we're cold heart bastards but because they aren't fiscally conservative or viable. We really don't like stuff that isn't fiscally conservative, dems included (albiet we have idiots like Mayor White and a few others who like to spend). Our 9 BILLION dollar state surplus should be a testament to that.

In regards to the above posts, I am only basing this on a comparison to other places I have been. I live in rural NE Texas, so I can't speak pertaining to the other parts of the state. But the issue was not whether or not Texas is uber-conservative. No doubt parts of it are and other parts aren't. It was how Texas compared to the rest of the country. Compared to the parts of the country I've spend time in, or the parts of the country that people I know well are from, it is. Texas is definitely more conservative than S. Louisiana (although N. La is pretty much the same as Texas, as is Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia). Texas is definitely more conservative than the western states and a little more conservative than many east coast states. I don't know about the midwest. But I've witnessed everything I related on numerous occaisions.

You specifically mentioned the attitudes of the wealthy. I agree that wealthy people are "holier than thou" all over, but they just seem a bit more in-your-face about it here.

I see the same thing here in Wisconsin. It's not so much a "Texas thang."

Yup on the culture aspect, and there is a HUGE variety. You can watch the rodeo at Reliant Stadium, then go downtown, and watch the world class Houston Symphony, both in the same day. And Texas has a world class art museum, natural science museum, planetarium, library system, and don't forget that ZZ Top is from Houston too.

Not to mention.....

"They gotta lotta nice girls-ah.... A how-how-how-how."
