In Europe, England, and even the USA, it was known that if you educated the masses, they would become hard to control. It was only when there seemed to be a need, or an advantage, to educate children that public, free, and compulsory education came about. So what happened? The masses were taught only the minimum, just enough to make them trainable.
You cannot train someone in even a slightly technical job unless they have a basic education to start with. Back when jobs were mindless labor, an education was not needed for the masses, and in no way was the govt. of the USA going to waste money on such a thing. It was local communities who WANTED their children to be educated who hired school teachers.
It is intuitively obvious to the most casual observer that a nation of undeducated drones will never prosper. We have nations like that now, and they will likely never get past 3rd world status as long as their educated leaders keep them ignorant. It only takes one smart peasant to realize that someone needs to step up an kill the oppressive leader....
