North Dakota State Universtiy, University of North Dakota, U of Minn. Morris.

I'm looking into seeing if I can actually get into U of M. Twin cities, but it only has a 57% acceptance rate..

i know, i'm stupid, but whatever. These are the colleges I can probably get into.
It's completely worth it to apply to a TON of colleges. Trust me, it may seem like a hassle now, but you might end up getting into (or even getting a scholarship) from a school that you never though about attending before you applied. I never thought I would end up at either the undergrad or the law school that I'm at now, but I couldn't be happier with the way either turned out.

Something that way too many people overlook: If you're looking for a good value in education, there are TONS of great state schools that offer the same quality education as private schools for a fraction of the cost. You sound like you've got a good idea of where you're looking, so I'd definitely encourage you to consider tuition in your calculations, especially if you'll be taking out loans or paying for it yourself.

I don't know too much else about those schools, but I've heard amazing things about Minneapolis. It's supposedly one of the best places in the country to live, and will be growing rapidly in the future.

Do you know what in particular you want to study? That's a very important consideration.

If you go here you can search for schools that will fit your profile.

Also, you might have already seen this, but at UND's website, you can predict your chances for admission and for scholarships.

Re: I can't find any decent colleges in smaller cities

I've heard a lot of good things about Montana State University: Bozeman.

It's a nice state school, beautiful campus and surrounding area. Small city surrounded by mountains. Tons of outdoor activities to pursue. The students are what you'd expect to find at a state school -- lots of parties and lots of girls. While its name isn't the same as say... UC Berkeley, it's still a land-grant school so it's nationally recognized.

It's inexpensive (as far as college goes). Best of all, it's a member of WUE so if you're from ND then there's a good chance you'll go there for their in-state price.

Oh, and their admissions standards are fairly low

Picking a school based off of it's placement on the "stone-cold sober" list is a poor idea. A school with a varied night life is much better than just going to a "drinking school" or just going to a stone-cold sober school.

Re: I can't find any decent colleges in smaller cities

Cornell - it's in Ithaca New York with a measly 29,952 souls in the city.
The claremont colleges (good luck getting in to some of them) have a mere 33,999 people in Claremont California.

Furthermore, just how "good" are we talking about?

My friends at Wheaton and at the Naval Academy are some of the biggest alcoholics that I know.

When I was in high school, Cornell was my absolute #1 dream school. I was convinced that the MASSIVE (in my mind) city of Ithaca would be a paradise that I could never fully explore.

Claremont is fantastic as well, can't really beat the weather.

why 800,000?

Is it a number or is it the density?

Re: I can't find any decent colleges in smaller cities

This one has probably already been mentioned by now, but University of Utah is in Salt Lake City, which it's self only has about 200,000 people. The surrounding towns bring that total up somewhat, but it remains a fairly small town environment.
