A College Degree, Funded by Pot - PULP

College-bound students in Pueblo will be able to benefit from taxes on legal marijuana grow operations starting in 2017. In November, Pueblo voters approved an excise tax on marijuana cultivators to fund college scholarships and various other community projects by a 60 to 40 percent margin.

ok

why the shrug? why even post that?

it will be interesting to see how it affects students in Pueblo, which is, as far as I know, one of the poorer major towns in this state. only problem for Pueblo is it could very well drive out any cultivators (and their $$$) who are already there - though that might not be such a bad thing to many of the residents of Pueblo.

I knew a few folks during the 1970s and 1980s that paid their college expenses by selling (not exactly legal) pot. ;)

I imagine that is still done to this day.

Taxes on legal products helping to pay for college, not a big deal. Unless of course it is because someone has a bee in their bonnet because the product is marijuana. Change pot to say avocados and would anyone have bothered making a thread?

there are obvious differences between the situation you've described and the one from the article. avocados are not illegal to possess or grow in the united states, for instance. it's an interesting situation.

not every thread needs to be about starting an argument over some controversial topic.

Bolded begs the question what is the difference between legally growing avocados and legally growing marijuana?

Marijuana is still illegal in most of the country. Spreading information about all of the good being done in states that have legalized it will help the cause.

...it's still illegal. Colorado says it isn't, the feds say it is. The feds are allowed to arrest you for smoking or growing or having marijuana. it's still "illegal".

State says its legal but feds don't, only they wont do squat about it. So guess what its the same as using taxes on avocados.

Meh, I just don't think this is a big deal.

...well yeah, it is de facto the same thing as taxing avocados. the fact that taxing weed is now, in some places, essentially the same thing as taxing avocados is interesting and worthy of discussion.

Only the OP isn't about taxing marijuana but how they are using the taxes garnered from marijuana. I can see how people would be upset because marijuana is in the article, but you have to be pretty foolish to be upset that a LEGAL product is being taxed and that those taxes are being used. Heck you would have to be pretty foolish to be upset if a govt would refuse tax money from illegal products as well. perhaps you could claim it would be better to stop the illegal commerce but obviously the govt is utterly incapable of doing so, next best thing is to get taxes from them.

...okay then the fact that using marijuana taxes to fund higher education (which is a new program) is the same as using avocado taxes to fund higher education is interesting and worthy of discussion, or failing that, at least some of us are interested in knowing about it.

it sounds more to me like the only reason you've posted in this thread is because there's something about the OP that bothers you and I doubt that it's the idea that "it's the same as taxing avocados" that's doing it.

Doesn't bother me at all. I shrugged because I know some people would be all upset because of marijuana. if it was avocados instead I seriously doubt there would have been a thread started

Just as is getting through college by selling one's body.

I had the better option. I went through university funded by the state.
