Barred From ‘Boys Only’ Class, One Young Girl Took Matters Into Her Own Hands[W:74]

Re: Barred From ‘Boys Only’ Class, One Young Girl Took Matters Into Her Own Hands

What's the reason a public library would offer a class on robotics for kids but restrict it to boys only????

What's the reason? Strict no girls policy. Why?

Do you defend prohibiting girls from educational classes??? Just because they are girls?

Do you defend that policy?

I think boys, girls, men and women sometimes need a place for just them that is free of everyone else. One of my larger points here is that women are barging in on pretty much everything and not leaving anywhere for boys and men to go to just be themselves with other people from their own gender. I don't know if that was the case here, but as other have said it's possible, and if so, then really the girl and her supporters are in the wrong. It's really not as simple as sexism if women are excluded from something, but sometimes it really does just boil down to I don't want you around, leave.

I'm more than a little sick of women doing this crap, sorry.

Doing what? Wanting to learn? Holy ****ing ****.

Re: Barred From ‘Boys Only’ Class, One Young Girl Took Matters Into Her Own Hands

Do you only question things you don't agree with?

How does it appear this is "stretched"?

If more info comes to light and this story proves to be bogus, I'll gladly call it bogus crap too.

Until then we can only comment on what we know.

Based only on what's provided in the OP - how do you feel?

No. But when they fit less with my experience i look for confirmation more often.

Re: Barred From ‘Boys Only’ Class, One Young Girl Took Matters Into Her Own Hands

This here:
According to Cayen’s account of the events, the library’s assistant director said the class was only offered to boys because “boys’ academic and literacy skills don’t improve over the summer break,”
Is equally insulting to boys themselves. They need a special class because they, what, becomes stupid during the summer?

I'm more than a little sick of women doing this crap, sorry.

Sorry. No one gives a **** what you think.

You realize your only purpose on this forum is to be another Tigger? Of course you do, that's your goal: Insulting women. Putting women down. Trash talking women.

You like the negative feedback and bull**** attention you get, too. I think your account should be closed on the account of your constant baiting and trolling. I'm sick of piggish men on this forum doing this crap, sorry, and then no one really gives a damn to do anything about it in response, sorry, and therefor it just continues and continues as if the baiting sexism is entirely tolerable.

Go **** yourself, sorry.

Your a prick, sorry.

What issue????

Why should a summer class on robotics be ONLY for boys????

At the very least, if you're gonna do that, then offer a summer robotics class ONLY for girls too.

Why exclude girls from education????

This is NOT rural Iraq. This is North America. 2015.

Crap like this is unacceptable.
I'm making the distinction between a taxpayer-funded public course, and a private one. In the former, there's no way one can justify offering a course to only one sex on something of general application like robotics.

But in private initiatives, it would be intrusive for the state to interfere.

I helped to run a boys club for several years and all our activities were for boys. We knew that girls' clubs operated too and none of the sisters of the boys felt discriminated against. There's a lot of value in boys doing some things by themselves. They are often more focused.

Re: Barred From ‘Boys Only’ Class, One Young Girl Took Matters Into Her Own Hands

Pretty much. My problem with it though is that I know that feminists and liberals don't care one little bit if something is public or private and will just order a private facility to allow everyone into their classes just as quickly as they will tell public facilities to do it. I have run out of patience with liberals and feminists to the point where I just get pissed off when they start running their pie holes about how they're owed something. No asshole, just because you're a woman, gay, black or what the **** ever doesn't mean I don't have a right to only associate with only those people of my choosing. So please, shut up and **** off.

The problem with life is that there will always be people who you disagree with and are fed up with. Men will associate with men when they want and women with women - it's a free world and no amount of regulation can stop informal same-sex socialising.

In my church, my wife goes for a girls' night out once a month. I now organise going out for breakfast every Saturday morning with some of the men. I haven't made it a church event - it's just that I know the men from there. I hope that you can still do similar things in America!

Barred From

Come on now!!! What f___king century are we living in???

Why would a robotics class be "boys only"????

That's really just damn insulting and silly.

:censored
There's nothing wrong with a boys-only class. If girls want a robotics they can have one, too. No problem.

Boys learn diferently than girls.

Are you daft? There was no girls robotics class. Was the girl just supposed to defecate one out of her own rear-end?

She was told she could not take the class. Period. Not that she'd have to wait for a "girls only" class to be created.

And again - why should an educational class, in the summer time, at a PUBLIC LIBRARY, be restricted to boys only?

Are boys THAT fragile?

My girls played ice-hockey on a team where they were the only girls. My girls took Kempo with a majority of boys. Should boys be prevented from taking gymnastics?

Why would anyone desire to prevent girls from taking science/math related classes????? Why?

What's the fear here? Are girls too smart? Do they embarrass the boys because the boys feel dumber with them around?

At 9 years old - are the boys getting boners simply by having a girl in the room?

I agree. And I enthusiastically support same-sex education. But the issue here is a program created to support male literacy and a class offered by the public library. With all the HR training I've had to suffer through, I can't believe that somebody at that library didn't think about excluding part of the public on the basis of gender and what the consequences of "boys only" might be. Amazing in 2015.

Re: Barred From ‘Boys Only’ Class, One Young Girl Took Matters Into Her Own Hands

Maybe they wanted to run a class for boys so they could enjoy a paternalistic environment doing "boy things". When you're 9 years old gender roles are important, and having a girl in a class that would otherwise be only boys would change the whole dynamic, to the detriment of boys who may not have a paternal figure to provide such an environment elsewhere.

A mixed gender environment isn't always a benefit, depending on the outcome you're aiming for.

Oh dear god.... :doh

That's easy to accomplish. Offer one robotics class for boys, AND offer another for girls. Simple as that.

However, that's not what was done here was it?

Tell me you don't see that. Tell me.

You're an insult to intelligent men everywhere.

Which has diddley-squat to do with this specific situation.

Go cry your little boy tears some place else.

Oh doesn't it?

You're the nitwit who made this about gender.

Re: Barred From ‘Boys Only’ Class, One Young Girl Took Matters Into Her Own Hands

Well good for Cash Cayen! It sounds like she had a proper education with the help of her mother. Perhaps, that was just as much an important lesson as the class she will now be able to attend.

Re: Barred From ‘Boys Only’ Class, One Young Girl Took Matters Into Her Own Hands

I find it insulting to boys.

I certainly see that point. I think, though, as the local library board chair said, the intentions were good.

And I rush to emphasize that it's important to identify and try to correct learning deficits. The fact is that fewer little girls and young women are drawn to STEM studies and careers, and trying to understand why is important. (Take care, however, that you are PC. Larry Summers is detestable, but he was crucified when he was President of Harvard for daring to suggest that it might be possible that girls just aren't as drawn to STEM as little boys.)

If little boys and young men are demonstrating literacy deficits, these must be addressed.

But this program's development was incompletely thought out and poorly executed.

Re: Barred From ‘Boys Only’ Class, One Young Girl Took Matters Into Her Own Hands

I don't give a **** about public libraries or public education and reject them flat out, so you might want to avoid relying on them.

This explains SOOOOO much

Re: Barred From ‘Boys Only’ Class, One Young Girl Took Matters Into Her Own Hands

To be honest, I'm not opposed to girls being in the class and I can understand why public institutions can't discriminate, but I'm smart enough to know what this is really about.

It's about a nine year old girl wanting to take a robotics class. Nothing more.

Re: Barred From ‘Boys Only’ Class, One Young Girl Took Matters Into Her Own Hands

Why does every class, event and everything else for that matter have to be open to everyone? There is really nothing wrong with having a class for just boys or girls. Yes, yes, everyone loves gender equality and all of that crap, and yes, they should have had a class girls could join, but a boys only class isn't some great evil.

What if there is no real demand for the later?

Re: Barred From ‘Boys Only’ Class, One Young Girl Took Matters Into Her Own Hands

What if boys are actually doing better in the boys class and there is no real demand for the girls class? Do you just throw the few girls interested into the boys class and risk lowering the boys grades? I'm just curious here, but would that be the right course of action? Is equal access more important than the majority of the kids grades in the class? I'm not saying that is likely, but I find myself curious how far this equal access is always right mindset goes.

However this was a class in robotics. Not a gender specific class. It was held at a public library. It was not a "boys only" subject matter. They are lucky the girl's mother did not bring a discrimination lawsuit.
