    Well I disagree.

Teachers enjoy a lot of benefits, that don't come in the form of direct pay.
In Georgia for instance, teachers (including other select professions) can qualify for down payment assistance on the purchase of a home.

    I could agree with that.

my wife's starting pay is about 37k once she finishes her degree, which i think is a little high, even though she is in special ed and those people should be paid more. std teacher starting pay in this region should be 28-32k imho.

masters should not add $$$ unless skill and outcomes (controlled for other influences) increases, but i have no idea how to get a proper measurenent. testing ain't it.

lastly none of this matters until society begins to value intelligence again and students become motivated to learn again. until that happens, the best teachers in the world will not be wholly effective.

    Again, I agree.
    Rational thought for the win.

I just looked up the starting pay in my school district, it is $32k for a Bachelors and $37k for a masters. Actually sounds a bit low for me. Two years after college, I was making $30k (in private industry) - and that was 25 years ago. Whats that, like $50k today? Of course the benefits I got weren't quite as nice.

They work 9 months though. Now if they worked summer school and did after school stuff (basically made up the time) I would completely agree.

    Expect it.

Reasoning being, for 1 the unions, they are organized against the people and the unions are political partisans.

    2. Tax payers fund the schools, so joe blow, sees teachers protesting raises being suspended and he just his job, while still having to pay property taxes, for teachers, etc.
He's gonna get a little pissy.

    3. People are a lot more familiar with what teachers do, than you guys let on to.
Most of us attended public schools for about 12 years, we've seen a lot, not all.

    4. Parents that are stuck in a ****ty school system, can be completely helpless at fixing it.
    1. Nurses and prison guards are also in unions.
    2. Hospitals are partially funded by tax money, prisons entirely.
    3. They think they are, anyway.
    4. There you have a point. Parents should be able to choose their kid's schools.

Teachers do "after school stuff" now. We also do quite a bit during the summer for which we don't get paid.

Teachers unions shouldn't exist, it's unethical.

Teachers deserve a wage at which they are willing to work for.
Everyone has a right to be pissy, it's the USA.

    Nope.
In one instance, you have actually experienced the school, in reality, in the other, you've watched a gross dramatization.

I seen all sorts of teachers.
Some who just go through the motions and others who actually try to do a good job.
It's no different than going to work anywhere, these people exist in all environments.

It's one thing I do agree with teachers on, parents should be the most responsible for their children's education.
Although living in a ****ty school system, while having limited resources can hurt this a lot.
Teachers need protection from board members and adminstrators that have personal agendas that have nothing to do with what is best for the school or the students. I've seen board members use their position to get back a teachers they don't like. I've seen good teachers fired, in spite of excellent evaluations, by board members with a personal agenda.

Law and Order was a joke. The point is that attending school does not give the complete picture of what it's like to teach. I've been on both sides and what I thought was true as a student turned out to be completely different as a teacher.

By the way, thanks for making sense of my poorly worded post. I shouldn't post before my coffee.
