you would think that he would have an opinion about this bailout mess....does anyone know if he has said anything?

We already know his opinion.

"John McCain is the true Maverick".

He's just waiting to say anything because McCain never took a position on it.
Once McCain has a position, Romney's McCain decoder ring will light up and give him the talking points.

Well, i was leaping to an assumption.

But in all seriousness, it is likely some Conservatives who are against the bailout will hold their tongue if they want McCain to be elected.

And it is also reasonable to assume that a strong McCain supporter would want to be sure of what McCain stands for before saying something that could embarrass McCain's position.

At this stage it is likely McCain will support the Bill, if not extremely likely.
But for awhile we had no idea what he might do.
And i do not think he did either.
