How To Profit From War

Why, exactly, would a book about the KGB's operations spend much time talking about the other side? The Contras were mentioned, as were various other US operations throughout the world, but the main focus was on Soviet moves; not quite as much on Western counter moves.

I haven't read the book. So do you have any other sources that I don't have to buy to back up your claims?. Or how about a relevant quote or two from the book to back up your claim of Soviet involvement in Nicaragua? That would work.

So why did congress stop funding the Contras? You could probably find a free source that on the internet.

"The main early objective of KGB penetration of the Sandinista FSLN was the creation within it of what the Centre called ‘a sabotage-terrorism group’ headed by Manuel Ramón de Jesus Andara y Ubeda (codenamed PRIM), a Nicaraguan surgeon working in Mexico.³

Having gained Semichastny’s approval, Sakharovsky directed the KGB residency in Mexico City to give Andara y Ubeda (PRIM) $6,000 to purchase weapons and instruct him to despatch an ini-tial group of seven guerrillas, later to be increased to twenty-two, from Mexico to Nicaragua. His guer-rilla group was to be assembled at a camp in Nicaragua by 1 March 1962, ready to begin sabo-tage operations against American bases a fortnight later

In the heady early years of the Cuban Revolution, the Centre seems to have believed that its example was capable of inspiring movements similar to the Sandinistas in much of Latin America. Guerrilla groups sprang up in Colombia, Venezuela, Peru and Guatemala

All political efforts by the Soviet government, and hence by our country’s intelligence service, were aimed at causing the greatest possible harm to North American dominance in this part of the world. So we supported politically, sometimes by sending weaponry or other aid, anyone who was against United States dominance - any government, any national liberation movement, any revolutionary group. However, with few exceptions, the extreme left [other than pro-Moscow Communist parties] did not enjoy great popularity in the Krem-lin at that time. They were feared, and for that rea-son were always sidelined. But reasonable patriotic centre-left forces in Latin America always found strong support in the USSR. I personally took part in many operations of this type. I worked with many Latin American leaders, trying at least to encourage them, to help them as far as possible in their anti-American stance.³

It looks like it's mostly about Cuba...in the 60s...and we already knew there was soviet involvement there. I'll try to read more of it later. In the meantime, why you don't read the links in my post? It should only take a few minutes of your time...compared to reading an entire book.

This will be the third time you've avoided answering the question...

Uh, no. It certainly mentions Cuba; but it also mentions a number of other guerilla groups which were armed by Moscow.

Congress stopped funding the Contras due to a mix of Iran Contra and the defeat of the Sandinstas later on.

Until I find time to read the book...would you mind providing another source? If there was soviet involvement it shouldn't be too hard to find another one, right?

"...On the eve of Reagan's re-election, the S/LPD spread the story that Soviet MiG fighter jets were arriving in Nicaragua. With journalists citing unnamed "intelligence sources", the story was repeated throughout the U.S. media and spurred a Democratic senator to discuss a possible airstrike against Nicaragua. However, the story later turned out to be a hoax. Several journalists later acknowledged they had been handed the story by Reich's office. According to the Miami Herald, the S/LPD also spread a rumor that Nicaragua had acquired chemical weapons from the Soviets. Newsweek reported that it told reporters that high-level Sandinistas were involved in drug trafficking, but US drug officials said there was no evidence for such a charge...."

The S/LPD was declared illegal after an investigation by the Comptroller General, who wrote in an October 30, 1987 report that the S/LPD engaged in "prohibited, covert propaganda activities, beyond the range of acceptable agency public information activities". The S/LPD also violated "a restriction on the State Department's annual appropriations prohibiting the use of federal funds for publicity or propaganda purposes not authorized by Congress...."
