Welcome to the club.

One month eh? You'll be bored soon enough

Four million, excuse me.

If I want to live on my current income in the city, with 6.5% return on stocks and 3% inflation, that's what I'll need. It's also presuming I'll live to 100 which may be optimistic, but it's better than planning for kicking the bucket at 90 and finding that I'm a lot healthier than i thought I'd be.

I only have about a mil stashed away. The trick is to find a job where you can build four pensions at the same time. Well, one is a 401k.

I wish I could say that I didn't have any chores. I work harder now than I did when I was working. Now it is mostly physical as before it was sitting on my butt. The wife isn't retired yet so I do the cleaning, cooking, tree chopping, remodeling, snow plowing, log milling, truck fixin and furniture building.

You are right about the sacrifices to get to a place where you don't have to sacrifice. Good on ya.

My Darling and I are seriously considering the south of Spain, hopefully not too far from Rota since there's a Navy base there. Got any suggestions?

Long ago in 1968-9 I worked in La Coruna, Spain and found the people their friendlier that one can imagine but things have changed so I cannot speak about today but those folks do know how to live!

I am working retired. I draw from my retirement funds as required but I still save money for the future.

WHERE DO YOU GET NO CHORES ???

I agree with Auntie S. on this.

Every morning I feed the cats and rake the litter boxes.

Then I get cleaned up and dressed.

Then I take out the trash and pick up other people's litter on the way to the dumpster.

Then I do dishes from the day before while breakfast (usually a microwaved cheese burrito aka kaesedia) is cooking.

I don't have enough dishes to fill the dishwasher so I just use it for a drying rack.

Then I either meet with clients, go to meetings with staff, or work from home at my workstation set up -- 3 screens & 1 laptop & 1 printer/scanner.

Sometimes I sweep.

Sometimes I vacuum.

Sometimes I do laundry.

The bathroom needs cleaning sometimes.

WHERE do you get NO CHORES ???

Yipes! Some of you people need to pull your heads out of your butts! By "no" chores I don't mean I am a bug in amber. Of course there are things to do, how stupid can one be? My intention was I do them how and when I please. If I want to drive to the coast in Galveston or fly to Kookamunga I do so anytime I please and if the floor isn't swept who gives a #$%@? I'll sweep it whenever I damn well please.

Where did the 4.5 million come from?

Expensive lifestyle perhaps. I determining my own retirement I calculated how much I will need to retire "comfortably". Retiring if you plan to maintain your current lifestyle, requires a good chunk of change. I never considered retiring if I am going to have to pinch pennies. I exceeded my numbers calculated by slightly less than 1/2 million just so I could come and go as I please in retirement. I worked in the past 10 years seven days a week and averaged about 80-90 hours per week. This is not uncommon in the offshore oil production business , ask anyone who works in it. I simply told myself to gobble up all the hours I could and invest that money wisely/conservatively and now I feel great that the "sacrifice" has paid off.

Truth. Start saving early... it seems like it takes forever to build up, but it will happen. I do not want to retire with a small pension and SS, I don't want to have to worry about finances ever.

Bullseye! My father made me understand money at a very young age. I always saved money and worked in a store when I was nine years old making 35 cents per hour. I shoveled snow, mowed grass and raked leaves around the neighborhood even though my dad gave me a small allowance, worked all through high school in a grocery store and college cleaning staff offices. I loved working and knew it was my only avenue to a comfortable retirement. Most of the people I knew and worked with thought very little of retirement days and now they a scared because the money they made the spent as soon as they made it. This is now paradise!!
