Did not know where to put this thread so I guessed here. I read an article on what we are doing wrong with our dogs and don't agree on some of it but I am not a dog but I am passing these items in the article on. Apparently there are many articles written on the simple things we do that we should not do.
Dogs don't like to be left alone for long periods of time, when you yell at them ion their face, when you tease them, when you walk them on short leashes as they like to sniff and explore.
Dogs hate to be hugged as they see it as dominating.
They don't like to be tapped or petted on the head!? They prefer to be petted on the rear side of the back. and a good belly rub.
They don't like to wear costumes like for Halloween.
As I said I don't agree with a few of these especially the no petting on the head, but what so I know.

I don't know. i have a cat and I often joke that when i am giving it some attention by petting it, I joke about that being annoying to the cat and i'm going to be annoying my cat for a while.

Another similar joke i like to make is I have a female friend who is slightly ticklish on her sides. So when I lightly pole her, I like to call that poking a little fun.

do you often "lightly pole" people?

I don't buy half of it.

Most dogs love my ear scratchies. I've tamed some scary-ass big old dogs that way.

Most dogs I've known love attention, period. Pat their head, scratch their ears, hug them, if they like you many of them don't give a damn as long as it is attention.

Dogs are very social animals. They love human companionship. They'll do okay if left alone for long periods of time regularly, provided you give them adequate attention when you ARE home. Anyone who gets a dog and leaves it alone except for sleeping shouldn't have a dog. Get a cat. They dont give a damn.

I've had more than a few 100 pound dogs, great dogs. I'd never get in their face to yell. Good grief. They aren't stupid. Hugging a dog? I agree. Don't do it. If they love you to bits it may be okay, but Jesus, they aren't Barbie Dolls. Give 'em space.

I often petted my friendly Giants on the head. But they knew me. A strange dog? Fugettaboutit. Open hand.knuckles out. Held for them to come to you. Hands are very threatening. It's those thumbs after all. A good belly rub? Perhaps. But a dog lying on its back is making itself very vulnerable. Beware with strange dogs as, even if they invite a belly rub, one false move and... ;)

Is anyone besides me confused... or amused... by why a discussion of how to treat one's dog is in the "Dating and Relationships" forum?

Well, it is a relationship.

My dog trained me well and I learned from him that everything on this list is spot-on. The one thing I do not know about is the Halloween costume which I never bothered with in the first place. As a pack animal, dogs cannot abide being abandoned (left alone) which is why they will shower an owner with a welcome even after the briefest absence.

Well, there's an old joke.

The guy was having a romantic dream in which he was making love and kissing his girlfriend. Then he woke up and his dog was sleeping next to him.

Or else!
