My ex did the same thing, except that he shaved it off in the early 80's, about 5 years after we married, and I had never before seen him clean-shaven. Freaked me out a little, and I felt like I was sleeping with a stranger for a couple of days, until I got used to it.

My husband is a 20+ year Army retiree. When he retired, he threw away his razor. He tries to get away with that ZZ Top thing, but I make him keep it managable and somewhat under control. The first time he shaved completely, our girls (babies at the time) didn't recognize him, and the youngest cried and wouldn't let him hold her.
