I don't know; it worked pretty well as the basis of pretty much every Western society for a couple thousand years. Of course back then humanity was more interested in what worked well than what was fair.
That one word... "fair" has done more to destroy human society in the last hundred years than probably any other word in any language on the face of the planet. Definitely in the United States it's done massive amounts of damage to society in the last century; with Feminism being only one example of it.

We can have a world that both works and is fair to all. We don't have to have slavery for some.
Too bad, Tigger. You don't like it? Tough. Life's not...fair.That one word... Who's talking about slavery? I'm just talking about people with different strengths and weaknesses putting those talents to best use rather than trying to be something they were never intended to be.
Very true. Life was never intended to be Fair either. I'm not really looking for it to be Fair. I'm just looking for it to operate the way it was intended to.

child support and alimony aren't 'rights' though - they're stipulations of the law regarding the familial situation and care of the dependents (those who are unable to care for theirselves yet)
it's a default that this privy goes to females from the start - fortunately we've seen a shift away from this default and more men are being granted custody - meaning the mother pays support. In these cases the custody is granted based on the idealy situated parent - the courts do their best, anyway.
Per alimony: I don't support it unless one individual is unable to support theirself due to decisions made in the marriage. right now it's based on a 'upholding and continuation of lifestyle' which is bull, I think - if you aren't married anymore then NO your life is not the same . . . sorry, but that's a reason to seek couples counseling perhaps - or maybe be more careful before getting married - and even not to cheat around or be a heartless bitch. But trying to maintain lifestyle? why bother getting a divorce if you insist on only relying on your ex for financial support? I think it's pathetic.

Do we really need to go throught the CAN vs SHOULD do thing again?
This is where we differ significantly. I've never been of the opinion that we have a say in how things SHOULD be done. We choose how we do them, but a higher power decided long ago what SHOULD be done.
