To avoid a quagmire on either side, the mass posting of joint resolutions, which my opponent so handily did in the open forums, shall not be permitted without him also picking out the pertinent information to his case contained within, and posting it. If he is going to use lengthy or convoluted documentation to support his case, the burden is on him to know and understand the documents he is using and to highlight the points he is specifically referencing.
Further, I want to remind him, that this is about JUSTIFYING the war. This is not JUST the runup, it's not JUST the aftermath. We are going to dissect this issue in it's totality, as best we can given the rules.

Was the Iraq War Justified?
Also, just posting links is not a proponent of true debate.
The debate is more about articulation of the debator than just throwing links up and demanding someone to figure out what your talking about.

This is about whether or not this invasion was reasonably justifiable. Was there a legitimate threat posed by Saddam? Were his "violations of the ceasefire" an actual threat to middle east stability? Were we correct in our assessment of the threats? Did our government lie to us or mislead us in the runup to war? Was congress actually intelligently informed in making their decision to go to war...oh wait I'm sorry, authorize force. I don't want him to come in and post a cop out "but Cheney said this so we had to believe him" or "but Bush had this intel report so we had to believe him." No, I want all sides of this brought out and examined. If he is going to cite intel reports that led to decision making, then I am going to cite the criticisms of those reports prior to their usage and why they should have never been used. The rabbit hole is going to go deep here.
I'm only interested in this if we are examining the totality of this invasion. Again, this isn't just about Joint Resolutions and Congressional votes...this is about whether or not we were truly justified in invading Iraq. We will make our arguments and the forum members will decide who carried the day.

I also implore both of you to read the True Debate Rules (True Debate Rules and Guidelines)
And inform me when you have read and agree to them prior to starting up the debate. |

Several sources I intend to cite are coming from some recent books on the debate subject and are not necessarily available on the net, other than some references on review sites and other areas. I have no problem allowing my opponent to reference books as I will just run down to Books-A-Million with a notepad and grab a chair to verify his claims. I will make chapter and page numbers available for reference and ask that my opponent do the same.
I would like any particular objections to be voiced well in advance so we can have them settled prior to the 30th. The two week time limit is fine with me also.
Thank you. |
