It may have been a CIA undercover ops mission. They break eggs if needed.

Certain under cover ops get national attention accidentally like Fast and Furious gun running to Benghazi for Libya and Syrian rebels. It's really only under-cover here in the USA. I remember reading about a soldier that was gun running and told his girlfriend. He got shot on the side of the road. His helmet and radio was placed next to his car, basically as a warning sign. The world caught up on the knowledge of the gun running and it's not so top secret now, except to people who want to say Clinton is a liar. Crazy how she would cover up an under cover ops....heh

The CIA kills people all over the world, but they would never kill anyone on American soil....So I'll go with the lone gun man and the single bullet theory.
 
Tragic story. Hastings was a recovering alcohol and crystal meth user. His family said he had been successful in his attempts to recover. But a lot of phony "conspiracy theories" are coming from bogus astroturf "grass roots" groups like Prison Planet, Soros or Ford Foundation funded NGO media (e.g.- like the fake "Global Warming" threat) or clearly fake "UFO coverup" TV programs rather than genuine researchers. James Corbett and Jack Blood are genuine researchers who support this conspiracy, and believe he was murdered but I disagree with them.

Maybe being subtle was not the goal? Maybe they wanted it to be spectacular? Young man driving a nice car at a high rate of speed through several intersections at 3 in the morning? He must have been drunk or on drugs, eh?

The public thinks he basically killed himself. Maybe THAT was the goal?

He told at least one other person that he was onto a story about McChrystal and obviously others, and was starting to worry about people being after him.
