And the conspiracy is?
 
It's "Mein" in German. There was a saying my high school German teacher told us about the two vowels like that. I can't remember it exactly, but it was something about two vowels went walking, the first did the listening and the second did the talking. That was how we could remember to spell it correctly, with the "i" doing the talking in the word "mein."

English has all sorts of complicated non standard rules. They just need to be memorized one at a time.

There is also the vast sea of colloquialisms that eventually become accepted.

I tell people often that there are two ways to pronounce all English words -- the Latin way and the Irish way.
