This thread concerns the 8 June, 1967 attack by Israeli forces on the U.S. Navy signals intelligence ship the USS Liberty and specifically Conspiracy Theories (CT's) surrounding the attack such as the Isreali's deliberately attacking and attempting to sink a ship they knew all along was American and U.S. government collusion in the attack.
I am going to make my opinion on this matter clear right from the start. Israel certainly attacked the USS Liberty, but it was a tragic case of friendly fire which came about through gross incompetence at the command level on both sides. That is my opinion because that is where the facts lead me. To suggest it was anything else is a gross perversion of the truth whose motivations can usually be found in anti-Jewish, anti-Isreali or anti-U.S. Government ideology, not ground in sound reasoning and objective analysis of the facts. Most of the books and web sites devoted to this subject omit (probably deliberately) major parts of the puzzle that are required to reach an informed conclusion because they are written with an agenda.
The essay in the next few posts below was written about a decade and a bit ago by an old friend of mine, naval analyst and author Stuart Slade. Slade's essay is particularly important because it demonstrates the flaws in in communication between the U.S. and the Isreali's, some dubious dealings on the part of NSA and the utter failure of Israel Command and Control which allowed the attack to go ahead.
Please refrain from comment until the entire essay is published.
Thank you.
