Hi! I've been here for a short while exploring & getting a feel for the place. I like most of what I've seen, so I think I'll stick around for a while. Please be patient with my abysmal typing skills. Also, please understand that my only internet access is a shared, public computer (local library), therefore my responses may be lacking in their timeliness. That being said, laissez les bons temps roulez.

No home computer?

No computer, no TV.

Wow. I hate watching tv, but I find a large part of my day is spent on the computer either doing work, bills, social media etc...

To think, just 10 years ago, I hardly used the computer is weird.

Welcome to the board.

Thanx. I do have a computer @ work, but my boss frowns on using it for purposes other than my job.

Yeah, I'm presuming many work places actually monitor what people do on the computer. I wouldn't recommend it. Where are you from if I may ask?

I live on Long Island (just outside NYC), but I was born in Upstate New York and my parents are from New England.

Nice! Isn't Long Island one of the most (if not THE most) expensive place to live in the US?

Some parts are indeed very pricey. I however, live in a less affluent neighborhood.

Greetings from a fellow Long Islander - Huntington.

Depends where you live. I'm surrounded on all sides by four of the most affluent neighborhoods in the country, while my own neighborhood is decidedly middle class.

Thanks. I'm thinking similar to Boston or San Francisco. Actually, San Francisco is an interesting city. It has your very pricey places (which really look rather middle class) and then you have your poverty stricken areas not too far away. When I went to visit my sister in the city, I was shocked at the number of homeless people literally sleeping on the streets. People would just step over them in a maze like form. I asked her why they would want to sleep on busy streets where the night life was happening. She said it was safer for them than alley ways etc...Living near Boston, we see homeless people but there are many more places for them to go at night. I was surprised San Francisco (very liberal) did not do the same.

It's really no different here. In NYC homeless people often stay on the streets because it's safer than shelters - or at least that's what I used to read a couple of years ago.

On LI the neighborhoods can change almost literally from block to block. Just west of me is Cold Spring Harbor which is very affluent, while a little northwest, around the commuter rail station is a small working class immigrant enclave - mostly Mexican and Central American - with garden apartments and a few small bungalow type homes.
