Re: Ban on Political Endorsements by Pastors Targeted

I agree with the premise behind this thread, religion and politics don't mix.

However, the "American Taliban" comment was out of line.

As far as the rest of it goes, most people, including those who will have the final say in this issue, should be able to see why the ethical issues associated with religious leaders publicly expressing their politics are the reason for such a stipulation on something such as tax exemption status. It is one thing for a preacher/pastor/etc to have a private position on political candidates, but when such positions are brought up while they are in the capacity to influence their congregation or gives the impression, whether true or false, that their faith/congregation is in support of or against certain political candidates, then it is an ethics issue.

I do believe that this group will not get its way on eliminating this stipulation. Especially since there is another group of clergy who see how obvious the ethics issues involved in this are and are fighting the first group and the ADF.

Re: Ban on Political Endorsements by Pastors Targeted

Pastors, preachers, priests are Lobbyists for God, or what they think God expects of us, and that is not a good thing. If they truly understood the teachings of Christ, they would tend to their own flocks and not covet other flocks. "Render unto God, render unto Caesar" is very clear.
The separation of church and state was inferred even then....

I can remember the sunday "blue" laws back in the 50's and 60's...
Blue law - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I can't say that any of those laws actually hurt anyone, or helped anyone, they were more an attempt to control morals than anything else, and surely we know by now that you cannot legislate morality...
