I can't think of any times when this has happened before.
In one form or another...at larger and smaller levels this has been the Church norm since its inception. There are of course exceptions to the rule, but you are correct, never before has it been taken to this extreme.

For 69 million it must be a great church. Lets see some indoor pools to relax. Hot tubs, leather chairs instead of pews, a lot of LCD tv's. Also a shopping mall might be nice. Oh apartments to, that way you will never have to leave church. That sounds like heaven

Churches are only out there to make money off you. That is all they care about, and all they ever will care about.

Churches should have to disclose total donations to the IRS, even if they don't have to pay taxes on it. Failure to provide full and accurate disclosure should involve a prison penalty unless they can prove that the majority of it went to help the poor and needy.

Dollar's church took in $69 million in '06 | ajc.com
Joel Olsteen's ministry paid more than $150 million for the arena known as the Summit, where the Houston Rockets used to play. This isn't about following the teachings of Jesus. It is about pure and unadulterated greed.
