Unfortunately, there are a lot of really stupid people out there who can't see beyond someone's religion.

This is exactly and precisely why there is a separation of church and state. Sadly few ppl here understand that this separation is here to protect religious freedom and not the other way around.

Its not a few people its the so called moral majority. They say they are for freedom but they just want to force the dogmatic bull**** on everyone else.

Since the 1960's we have introduced liberal policies which have hurt America yet we have reduced the legal and moral framework necessary to keep the society on an even keel. With all the progressive values and liberal ideas being promoted so enthusiastically what prevents the dangers of excess anymore?

When America is careening toward a brick wall you sound like someone who laments the limiter on the engine preventing the car from exceeding 80 mph.

That is the really sad thing about right-wing so called "Christians"....they are all about religious freedom as long as it pertains to THEIR narrow views....

Thank God that we live in a Country where you have the absolute right to believe what you want to believe and practice whatever religion (or none) you choose to.

I have said for a long time that Romney's biggest challenge will not come for liberals/moderates....but will come from the right-wing base of the GOP who cannot stomach voting for a Mormon.

The problem with your analogy here is that it is the right-wing that is DRIVING the car....backwards and not paying any attention to where they are going.

Maybe this will demonstrate the full story. The Soviet Union was a closed society. The government controlled all the media and the messages. Yet what fueled the people's desire for freedom? Our music and our consumer goods. The Beatles. Levi jeans. Coke. Pepsi. McDonalds. The people wanted that. And as much as Reagan had to do with the end of Communism, do not discount the effect that western culture had on corroding the resolve of the people in charge.

And as bad as things were in the Soviet days, and from most accounts they were pretty bad, since the new system of government came about there are some Russians who believe that despite the hardships and the government control and censorship of the past, the old order was better than what 'modernization' has brought them.

Quote:
The author of this document is obviously a Russian patriot, a serious and decent man, and the critiques he offers of his country today can in no way be confused with nostalgia for its Communist past. On the other hand, his description of life there since the fall of the Soviet state is, to put it mildly, disquieting. His warning that Russian youth is afflicted by "disdain for knowledge, honest work, civilized business dealing, integrity, democracy, and human rights" should be of deepest concern to Russia's neighbors, and indeed all who wish the Russian people well.

[...]

The fabric of society changed with the disappearance of values and morals. Secrecy and repression were quickly replaced by the power of money unconstrained by either legal or moral frameworks. In the past there was a common expression - "Without papers you are a bug, but with papers, you are a man" - which meant that you were constantly required to ask permission from a countless army of bureaucrats to make any move. Now you cannot expect to be treated with respect unless your pocket is full of a wad of "greens," a prestigious foreign car is parked by your home, and your family vacations in the Bahamas. It doesn't matter if you earned this money by racketeering, selling drugs, or pimping. Your social status will be much higher than that of an engineer, a professor, or a doctor.

[...]

Children, on the other hand, immerse themselves completely in the attempt to master as quickly as possible the new rules of Russian life. And they are quite successful in achieving this. It is inevitable that the new generation of Russians will be completely different and the image it takes on will be the new image of Russia. In ten years, the entire world will be faced with the new Russia. The meeting will not be pleasant or easy, because the currently evolving moral standards, philosophy, and values will not be acceptable to other civilized nations.

And what brought this about?

Western Culture and Progressive Values. Progressive Ideas and Policies.

This is from a transcript of the flawed but still very informative documentary, "The Power of Nightmares."

Quote:
[ TITLE: 11pm, JULY 25th 1967 ]

PRESIDENT LYNDON B. JOHNSON: Law and order have broken down in Detroit, Michigan. Pillage, looting, murder…

VO: Only a few years before, President Johnson had promised policies that would create a new and a better world in America. He had called it “the Great Society.”

[ TITLE: President LYNDON JOHNSON, 1964 ]

JOHNSON: The Great Society is in place where every child can find knowledge to enrich his mind. It is a place where the City of Man…

VO: But now, in the wake of some of the worst riots ever seen in America, that dream seemed to have ended in violence and hatred. One prominent liberal journalist called Irving Kristol began to question whether it might actually be the policies themselves that were causing social breakdown.

IRVING KRISTOL: If you had asked any liberal in 1960, we are going to pass these laws, these laws, these laws, and these laws, mentioning all the laws that in fact were passed in the 1960s and ‘70s, would you say crime will go up, drug addiction will go up, illegitimacy will go up, or will they get down? Obviously, everyone would have said, they will get down. And everyone would have been wrong. Now, that’s not something that the liberals have been able to face up to. They’ve had their reforms, and they have led to consequences that they did not expect and they don’t know what to do about.

VO: In the early ‘70s, Irving Kristol became the focus of a group of disaffected intellectuals in Washington. They were determined to understand why the optimistic liberal policies had failed. And they found the answer in the theories of Leo Strauss. Strauss explained that it was the very basis of the liberal idea—the belief in individual freedom—that was causing the chaos, because it undermined the shared moral framework that held society together. Individuals pursued their own selfish interests, and this inevitably led to conflict. As the movement grew, many young students who had studied Strauss’ ideas came to Washington to join this group. Some, like Paul Wolfowitz, had been taught Strauss’ ideas at the University of Chicago, as had Francis ***uyama. And others, like Irving Kristol’s son William, had studied Strauss’ theories at Harvard. This group became known as the neoconservatives.

Christians benefit more from religious freedoms than anyone else in America. Sure atheists and other religions have suffered, but Christians sects are really best at persecuting each other.
