The Congressional Budget Office estimated the fines will raise around $36 billion over 10 years. Senate aides said the penalties would be modeled on the approach taken by Massachusetts, which now imposes a fine of about $1,000 a year on individuals who refuse to get coverage. Under the federal legislation, families would pay higher penalties than individuals.

This is irony at its best.

Obama goes on the tube ranting against how credit card companies unilaterally decide to fine people for the common, even 'good' practices of over drawing their accounts, refusing to pay their debts and the like. He defends his speech by saying the credit card company's rules are thick and hard to understand, if not intentionally obtuse.

Now Obama goes on the tube ranting for how the government unilaterally decides (hold the phone!) it's perfectly acceptable to fine people for the common, even 'good' practices of refusing health coverage and the like. He attacks them in spite of health care rules which are thick, hard to understand and intentionally obtuse.

Hypocrisy is alive and well in America.

If it's a private company fining people for 'being poor,' then it's "corporate greed."

If it's the government fining people for 'being irresponsible,' then it's "social justice."
